Box Score
Fayetteville, N.C. (January 13, 2011) — For the third-straight game, the Lady Lions just couldn't seem to get the big play when needed and leave hardwood with a conference win on the road.
For a while, it seemed as though they would. The Lincoln University women's basketball team (1-10, 0-4 CIAA) erased a double-digit deficit and led briefly in the second half before falling 61-53 to Fayetteville State Thursday night at the Felton J. Capel Arena.
Senior DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester)'s season-high 16 point gave her 106 points this season and 918 for her career as she surpassed the 900-mark on Wednesday night against Johnson C. Smith University. A senior from Chester, Pa., she also had eight rebounds. Sophomore Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) led LU on the glass with 11 boards.
Like the previous two games on the road trip, LU began strong with Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers)' scoring the team's first five points. After 20 points last night, though, she was shut out for the remainder of the contest.
Nine minutes in, Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) hit a 3-pointer to give LU a 16-12 edge, which would be LU's largest lead of the night, but the Lady Broncos (2-10, 1-4 CIAA) went on 19-2 run over the next 8:30 before Cynthia Johnson (Randallstown, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute)'s tip-in with two minutes left in the opening period halted the burst. At the break, the orange and blue trailed, 33-22.
In the second half, Lincoln adjusted, netting the first 12 points including four from Mosley and a big 3-pointer from Tahlar McIntosh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Alvernia HS). A clutch trey by junior Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) momentarily put Lincoln up 34-33 with 16:24 to go, but the home team did not fold and never trailed again. DuBose now has 119 points for the year and 946 in her 2.5-year career.
FSU's Tierra Coleman matched Mosley's 16 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double. Tiffany Haywood contributed nine points and 10 points.
Tonight, though, Lincoln took care of the basketball, finishing with 19 turnovers and pressured the Lady Broncos into 25. Both teams found difficulty making shots. Lincoln knocked down 20 of 70 shots (28 percent). The Lady Broncos were not much better, as they were 20-for-59 in finding mesh.
