LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — The Lincoln University football team has released its 2010 schedule complete with a Sunday afternoon game against a big rival, three home games and a Division I-AA opponent.
The Lions' third season since the relaunching of the program kicks off at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5 at Northeast High School in Philadelphia against Cheyney University. In last year's meeting, LU overcame a second-quarter deficit for a 41-20 victory at Northeast.
Lincoln then travels to the University of New Haven for the Harmony Classic on Sept. 11 at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium before opening the CIAA schedule in Richmond, Va., against Virginia Union on Sept. 18
On Sept. 25 Lincoln finally opens at home against Saint Augustine's College. The 1 p.m. tilt is the first-ever meeting between the schools. Last year, the Falcons finished 4-6.
October features just one home game, and that is an Oct. 30 homecoming matchup against Saint Paul's College. In the final weekend of the regular season on Nov. 6, Elizabeth City State comes to Avon Grove High School for a 1 p.m. affair.
Between those two home games at the end of the season, the Lions need to persevere through four consecutive October road contests, none of which will be more difficult than LU's oldest foe, Howard University, a FCS institution (formerly I-AA). The game kicks at 1 p.m. on Oct. 2 at Greene Stadium in Washington, D.C.
Howard has been LU's most frequent opponent, with the matchup historically being very even. The series stands locked at 24-24-7 with Howard winning the last meeting, 34-13, in 1960. Lincoln last defeated Howard, 12-8, on Thanksgiving Day in 1959.
The CIA schedule resumes Oct. 9 at Chowan University in Murfreesboro, N.C. in another first-time matchup. The game will be played under the lights with a 6 p.m. kickoff, LU's lone night game of 2010.
On Oct. 16, LU visits Bowie State, a school LU is 0-2 against all-time including a 51-20 defeat last year. The four-game road trip ends Oct. 23 in Petersburg against Virginia State. The Lions are 0-6 all-time versus the Trojans including a 34-14 VSU victory last year.
Last season, LU finished 3-7 in its second season of competitive football since the program disbanded in 1960. The campaign was a two-win improvement from the inaugural year in 2008. Lincoln returns eight starters on offense and nine starters on defense.
