No-no bid leads to biggest win in modern program history

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.
— Long live the king.

Peter Reyes (Bronx, NY) (Bronx, N.Y.) shut down arguably the CIAA's best team, holding Saint Augustine's College hitless through 5 1/3 innings Saturday an 8-2 win Sunday at Lincoln field.

By the time Wayne Lewis hit a double with one out in the sixth, Lincoln led, 8-0. The Falcons entered the week No. 4 in the latest Black College Baseball NCAA Division II/NAIA  poll, prompting second-year coach Anthony Plá to declare this win more than just another victory. After all, Lincoln entered the game 1-14.

"This is the biggest win in program history," he said. "This is huge."

Reyes, whose last name is Spanish for "kings," finished with a monster line: a complete game, 7-inning effort with 3 hits and two runs allowed. Neither of those runs were earned.  He also walked and struck out seven. He wasn't aware of the no-no until after the fifth because, custom to baseball tradition, nobody talked about it.

"I had been getting the ball up, but I got it down today," the senior hurler said. "We always play Saint Aug's well because you bring it against CIAA teams like this. In two years, we've come so far.

Indeed, his teamates played great defense behind him, committing just two errors. Timely hitting provided a cushion early with a five-run second and a two-run third.

A groundball by Omar Cham (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) (Highland Park, N.J./Highland Park) was booted by third baseman Chris Vette. Aaron Thomas (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area) and Phil Tomsic (Bangor, Mich./Bangor) scored after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch and a walk, respectively. Marquise Hudson (Piscataway N.J./Piscataway HS) (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) singled in Cham, who then came home on a double by Alejandro Rosario (Doradas, Puerto Rico) (Dorado, Puerto Rico).

In the bottom of the third, Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg) tripled to left, scoring Alexander Donald (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey) who had opened the inning with a walk. Tomsic would later single in Brown.

GAME TWO:

Lincoln dropped the second game, 10-7, nearly completing a necessary five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh.

Entering the final inning down 10-5, Lincoln's first two batters reached base. Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill) and Thomas both walked. Brooks, who had been suffering from an ankle injury, was taken out for pinch runner Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill). Vette relieved Alex Didio, who struck out two and walked one, but Rosario singled up the middle to score Mitchell and Thomas.

With the tying run at the plate, LU's top hitter Melvin Robinson (Bear, DE/William Penn) (Bear, Del./William Penn.) popped out to short.

Tomsic took the loss, allowing 10 runs, seven earned, in five innings.

LU plays at East Stroudsburg on Wednesday with first pitch set for 3 p.m..
