LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Virginia State knocked off Lincoln University 72-52 in the women's basketball game Tuesday in Manuel Rivero Hall at the annual PinkZone day.
PinkZone is an event orchestrated by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association to raise awareness as well as money for a cure for breast cancer. Pink T-shirts were distributed to the crowd, and the players sported pink dyed warmup shirts instead of their usual white ones. Lincoln University chose to have their PinkZone day in the month of February specifically because February is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Following the end of the women's game, Lincoln held a ceremony commemorating two Lincoln (3-18) University faculty members Linda Peterson, the secretary for the sports department who is in her 14th year of breast cancer survival and Kelly Griffith, an employee in the mail and copy center who is in her third year.
Leading the way for Lincoln University was Sharay Dubose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) who scored 14 total points and DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) (Chester, Pa./Chester) who scored 12. Dubose and Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) had six rebounds apiece.
The first half of the game was a trying battle for the Lincoln University Lady Lions who saw turnovers result in fast-break opportunities for the Lady Trojans (16-4), who jumped out to a big lead early.
Although they would get within six, LU could not overcome their deficit to the Virginia State Lady Trojans.
After going down as much as 15, LU got within 33-23 when DuBose got the offensive rebound and the put-back.
Several possessions later, Tequila Jimenez (South Jersey, N.J./Cumberland Regional HS) (South Jersey/Cumberland Regional) hit jumpers on consecutive possessions to get LU to 35-29 with 1:45 left in the first.
The Lady Lions went into the locker rooms for half time trailing a mere six points at 31-37.
But Virginia State wouldn't let Lincoln get too close adding five points to before Chanelle Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) (Philadelphia, Pa./Chester) made the first shot in the second half for the Lady Lions with two seconds left on the shot clock while being heavily pressured for a 42-33 game.
Dubose followed, making a 3-pointer with five minutes into the period.
Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic)made a free throw after missing her first, bringing the score to 47-38 with 14:37 on the clock, but Virginia would go on another spurt and close out the final minutes.
