Freshmen, threes lead way in win

Box Score

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY Pa. —
Thursday evening's win showed progress in the present and potential in the future.

The Lincoln University women's basketball team, defeated St. Paul's College, 55-53, in Manuel Rivero Hall. This fourth win doubles the win total of last year's team despite boasting a roster of mostly freshman and a lone senior. It was LU's first at home since knocking off Livingstone Nov. 30.

Tonight, it was the freshmen leading the way. Former high school teammates Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) (Capitol Heights/Charles H. Flowers) had a season-high 13 points, and Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) had another double-digit rebound effort with 11.

The Lincoln University Lady Lions got off to a strong start for the first half of the game against the Saint Paul Lady Tigers thanks to a slew of three pointers.

DeJauna Mosley (Chester, Pa./Chester) made the first basket trey from almost half court twice in a row. Right along with her was Chanelle Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Penn Wood) (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Wood) who added two threes and Waters contributing a bomb as soon as she entered the game.

Waters also registered five free throws and a layup bringing Lincoln, with those points earned LU a 23-14 lead with six minutes left in the first.

"I'm really proud of her," head coach Andy Haman said after the game. "From day one, we knew she could shoot, and she's starting to come out of her shell."

The onslaught continued the remainder of the half. Tahlar McIntosh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Alvernia HS) (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Alvernia)also contributed a wide open three, followed by one by Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus) with the shot clock winding down, allowing Lincoln to go into halftime up, 32-17.

LU was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc in the opening period.

In the second half, Lincoln claimed a 25-point with six minutes left, but Saint Paul's remained composed as Lincoln drained shots from everywhere on the floor. Saint Paul's leading scorer Tatiana Harris, after a shaky first half, heated up in the waning moments, finishing with 17 points.

Still though, with four minutes go, the lead was securely at 19 before the Lady Tigers' trap defense caused turnovers.

With 54 seconds, Lincoln had the lead by a mere three points after Juantale Cook  hit a pair of free throws and would shrink to one when Ellis made the first of two.

"Once they put the pressure on us on defense, we started playing not to lose and not to win," Haman said.

However, with two seconds left, after several Lady Tiger baskets clanged off the rim, Mosley came down with the decisive rebound. Although she missed both, Waters jumped the lane for an offensive board and dribbled out the clock to preserve the win.

Saint Paul's will look to avoid a sweep to Lincoln with a rematch set for 5:30 p.m on Friday. at Manuel Rivero Hall. It can be streamed live on BrandywineRadio.com
