WEST CHESTER, Pa. — Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) reached 900 points for her career and Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) tied a career-high with 13 rebounds Sunday afternoon against Millersville University in the 25th Annual Carol Eckman Classic hosted by West Chester University.
Joined by Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) as the team's leading scorer, DuBose's 10 points give her 906 for her career as she continues to make her way through the milestones.
Although the Lady Lions (0-6) dropped the contest, 68-47, DuBose was able to appreciate the feat.
“It's definitely a big step,” said the junior guard from Salisbury, Md. “I want the 1,000 points to come in a winning effort, so we're going to get after it during the break to make sure that happens.”
Saturday, she scored a season-low four points on 1-of-10 shooting but insisted the atypical struggles against West Chester were not the result of the pressure of reaching the 900 mark but were caused by a very talented Lady Rams team.
“I have to get in the gym and put more shots up,” she said. “I've been getting my shots, but they haven't been going in.”
On Sunday, the Lady Marauders (6-1) opened the game on a quick run, but Lincoln hung in early at 5-3 before trailing 36-17 at halftime. In the second half, Millersville opened with an 8-2 spurt, but Lincoln's pressure defense allowed Lincoln to stay within 20 for the remainder of the contest.
In the second half, it was Waters that was the driving force for the Lady Lions.
She had a nice drive to the basket in traffic for the tough lay-in and moments later lobbed an assist over a defender to senior guard DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester), who converted on her chance in the paint. Waters also added a pull-up jumper in transition. The eight second-half points enabled her to match her career high with 10 tallies.
Ekanem, meanwhile, secured a rebound late in the final minute to tie her career high with 13 rebounds.
“She was a beast,” DuBose said. “She used her size. All she has to do is get her hands up. She was great today.”
Perhaps more important than the individual accolades was the overall quality of the Lincoln possessions. The Lady Lions took better care of the basketball, having just 21 turnovers including eight in the first half. Defensively, LU forced the Lady Marauders into 26 turnovers, marking the first time this season that LU held the advantage.
