Second-half struggles continue versus Cheyney

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Following a first half in which both teams struggled to score points, Cheyney University pulled away from the Lincoln University men's basketball team Friday night at the Liacouras Center in the 19th Annual Battle of the Firsts, 63-38.

The Wolves (4 -0) opened the second half on a game-defining 19-1 run that saw the halftime score jump from 27-17 to 46-21 midway through the second period.

Richard Glover (Baltimore, Md./Havre De Grace HS) scored a season-high 10 points and was LU's lone player in double figures. Zane Oxley (Philadelphia/Martin Luther King HIgh School)'s eight points were a career high, besting the seven he had against Salem International on Monday night. He also totaled eight boards, the best in his two seasons with the Lions.

The first half was not pretty as both teams made just eight field goals apiece and combined for 24 turnovers.

Early in the period, that was not the case, as Cheyney scored 11 of the game's first 13 points, and for a Lions' squad that prides itself on defense, the early hole led to uncharacteristic miscues on the offensive end.

Both teams did settle in, and Lincoln erased the double-digit deficit to creep within seven at 27-20 with 17:15 remaining following a free throw by Oxley. However, the Wolves pushed the advantage to 46-21 until Richard Glover (Baltimore, Md./Havre De Grace HS)'s lay-up halted the 19-1 run. The basket ended an 11-minute field goal drought. Glover would also drain a three on Lincoln's next possession as he began to assert himself as a threat both along the perimeter and in the paint.

The Wolves, though, responded with a spurt of its own to take the rivalry game. CU was remarkably balanced with four players in double figures with David Burton setting the pace with 16 points. He also had 11 rebounds for the double-double.
