DuBose's 23 can't overcome turnovers

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Lady Wolves of Cheyney University used a huge second half to pull away with a 72-62 win over the Lady Lions of Lincoln University on Friday night at the Liacouras Center in the 19th Annual Battle of the Firsts. 

Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) continues her historic run to 1,000 points with 23 for the game, leading all scorers.  She also paced the Lady Lions with 9 rebounds, 7 steals and an assist.  Following with 11 of her own points to keep pace for a 1,000 was DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester).

For those keeping score at home with the road to 1,000, DuBose increased her total to 862, and Mosley now has 837.

The Lady Wolves (3-3) had four players in double-digits and were led by Nadirah Brown with 16.

The annual classic Battle of the Firsts pits two schools staking claims to the first historically black institution. Located just miles from each other, this anticipated matchup is always circled on the schedule and is always is a hard-fought contest between the two. 

 The Lady Lions were pressured into 21 first-half turnovers but were still able to keep pace with the Lady Wolves as they went into the intermission only down by a point, 35-34.  They were able to out-rebound the Lady Wolves 29-19.

The Lady Lions (0-2) shot much better than their opponents from the field and the line but weren't able to convert that into more points on the scoreboard. 

Despite the turnover problems, they also shot an efficient 42.9 percent from the field while LU's defense limited CU to 28.6 percent.

DuBose had an active first half as she did her best to keep the Lady Lions in it.  She had 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. 

The Lady Wolves pull away with a 9-2 run to begin the second half. With 18 more turnovers in the second half, LU's limited opportunities proved the difference.

The schedule does not let up as the Lady Lions travel to Baltimore, Md., Tuesday evening to face Division I Coppin State at 6 p.m.
