LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — Foul trouble for the Lincoln University men's basketball team helped end what had been a thrilling, double-overtime game against Philadelphia University, as the men lost, 71-62, Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Four Lincoln University starters fouled out by the time Philadelphia's Russell Frederick drained a crowd-quieting three for a 69-60 Ram advantage with less than a minute to go, effectively ending the evening anti-climactically.
The Lions fall to 2-10 while the Rams improve to 11-6.
Darren Clark (Boston, MA/Largo) (Boston, Mass./Largo, Md.), the only LU starter to make it all 50 minutes tied a career high with 26 points on eight of 12 shooting including five three pointers. Joining him in double figures was Damian Hyman (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman) (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) with 14 points. Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ) (West Palm Beach, Fla./Penn Wood) and reserve forward Shawn Rodgers (Philadelphia, PA/Imhotep) (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep) each had 10 rebounds.
Leading the way for Philadelphia was Frederick's 21 points. Mike Yocum had 15 boards and nine points with several key buckets late.
Despite the extra minutes, the game remained low-scoring as the teams settled into half-court offenses. Lincoln shot just 31 percent for the game while Philadelphia University was at 45 percent. Still, the game was relatively clean with only 25 combined turnovers. There were 43 total fouls, 28 of which were by the Lions.
Lincoln began the game on a 16-5 run behind slashing guard Clark. But by halftime, Philly cut the game to a 26-23 margin.
At the end of regulation, Yocum attempted a half-court shot at the buzzer that clanged off the rim, sending the game into overtime locked at 50-50.
In the first overtime, LU had a modest two-point advantage, but Yocum hit a jumper with 1:03 remaining. Lion Darrell Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester ) (Chester, Pa./ Chester) missed a layup on the next possession. The Ram's Jim Connolly attempted to end the deadlock with a 3-pointer that hit harmlessly off the top of the backboard.
The second overtime tested an undersized Lion team. Forwards Smith and Kristin Joyner (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson) (Brooklyn, N.Y./Thomas Jefferson) both fouled out, and Philly capitalized, scoring the period's opening six points for a 62-56 lead.
Mosley provided an answer with three, but on the Rams' next possession, Lemon hit got to the line after hitting a bucket over Hyman, who committed his fifth foul to join Smith and Joyner over the limit. Mosley joined him shortly after.
Frederick would hit a deep 3, providing an unanswerable distance.
