Lincoln to take on New Haven in home opener

Darby scampers for a touchdown in the fourth.
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.  — The Lincoln University football team opens its home schedule Saturday at 1 p.m. against the University of New Haven. It will be the first of three-consecutive home games at Avon Grove High School. CLICK HERE FOR GAME NOTES

The Lions are coming off a 41-20 win against rival Cheyney College last Saturday at Charlie Martin Memorial Stadium at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. The victory marked the first win over an NCAA opponent since 1959, when the Lincoln beat Howard, 12-8.

This weekend's opponent, the University of New Haven, features a program playing its first game since 2003. The Chargers program disbanded but has since been resurrected under the guidance of Peter Rossomando, a former coordinator at the University of Albany.

Last week, Kareem Dennis (Philadelphia, PA/Lincoln) (Philadelphia) provided the necessary spark to defeat Cheyney. Coming off the bench as the No. 3 quarterback, last year's starter started 8 for 8 including a touchdown pass to put Lincoln ahead. The ground, game, though, solidified itself as the strength of the team.

Christopher Darby (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) (Pittsburgh) and D'Ante Smith (Bowie. Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) (Bowie) ran for 95 and 92 yards apiece as the Lion offense amassed 223 rushing yards.

Saturday's game is Community Service Day sponsored by Jennersville Regional Hospital with the first 500 fans in attendance receiving rally towels. The game can be heard on Brandywineradio.org with Jon Schaeffer detailing the action.
