Lions Baseball Drops Weekend Series to Delaware State

DOVER, DE (February 22, 2009) The Lincoln University baseball team dropped a tough road game to Division I Delaware State on Saturday afternoon.(Statistics coming soon.)

 

The Lions went on top early in the first inning as the first three hitters reached base and scored.  Sophomore outfielder Omar Glinton (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine's) (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine's) began the game reaching on an error by the catcher and stole second base.  Freshman outfielder Robert Webster (Washington, DC/Bishop McNamara) (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) then reached on a hit by pitch.  He was followed by sophomore outfielder Melvin Robinson (Bear, DE/William Penn) (Bear, DE/William Penn) who hit a 2-run single and reached third on an overthrow to the plate.  Robinson scored on a fielders choice RBI by senior catcher Joe Kruemmer (Middletown, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) who hit a hard ground ball to third base. 

 

Delaware State would then tie the game in the bottom of the first inning after the first batter reached on an error and centerfielder Troy Drumman hit a two-run home run.  The next three hitters would reach on a single, a walk, and another single where they scored their third run of the inning.  The Lions got out of the inning on a fly out to second base. 

 

In the top of the second inning, the Lions would put up two more runs to go ahead 5-3 with help from the trio of Glinton, Webster, and Robinson as they would hit a double and back to back singles to retake the lead. 

 

Starting pitcher and sophomore Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) (Baltimore, MD/Seton Hill) kept the Hornets scoreless in the bottom of the second to help the cause.  In the bottom of the third Delaware State went on top for the first time of the game putting up four runs to take the lead 7-5. 

 

Lincoln would come back and score a run in the top of the fifth as Robinson led off the inning with a triple in the right center gap.  Kruemmer did his job for the second time in the game getting the ball on the ground to the third baseman for his second RBI to help the Lions to come within one at 7-6. 

 

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Hornets finally got to Brooks knocking him out of the game finishing with an eight run inning.  The game was called because of bad weather conditions to make it a complete game.

 

The Lions will be back in action as they travel to Elizabeth City State to play a double header on Friday February 27.  They then make their way to Harrisonburg, Virginia to play two double headers in two days for a total of six games in three days as they play Susquehanna University and then Pitt-Bradford on February 28 and March 1.
