WILMINGTON, Del. – The Lincoln University (Pa.) volleyball team displayed steady improvement throughout Saturday afternoon's nonconference match against Goldey-Beacom College inside the Joseph West Jones Center.
The Lions increased their offensive production in each frame before falling in three sets, 25-11, 25-15 and 25-17. Lincoln moved to 0-5, while Goldey-Beacom improved to 5-2.
Inside the Numbers
Niana Coar (Aberdeen, MD/) led Lincoln's balanced attack with five kills and two blocks.
Charly Manley (Upper Marlboro, MD/Frederick Douglass HS) turned in an all-around performance, recording 13 assists, three kills and six digs. Manley did not commit an attacking error on six attempts, finishing with a team-best .500 hitting percentage.
Yvette Mercedes (Columbia, MD/),
Elise Carter (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna HS),
Audreynette Lydgate (Bowie, MD/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) and
Amira Billingsley (Glen Burnie, MD/) contributed three kills apiece. Carter, Manley,
Jhordynn Rowson (Virginia Beach , VA/) and
Donavyn Morris (Chester, PA/) shared the team lead with six digs each.
Morris also recorded two service aces and three assists, while Rowson added an ace. Lincoln held a 4-3 advantage in total blocks, with Coar and Billingsley contributing two apiece.
Lincoln finished with 20 kills, 17 assists, three service aces, four blocks and 32 digs. The Lions' nine kills in the third set represented continued offensive growth as the match progressed.
Goldey-Beacom was led by Etta Harris with 10 kills, while Gabi Fullwood and Baylee Brin added nine apiece. Juliana Malena recorded 24 assists, and Lia Rodriguez finished with 15 digs.
How It Happened
Manley opened the match with a kill to give Lincoln the first point. The Lions remained within striking distance early behind kills from Coar and Carter before the Lightning used a run to create separation and capture the opening set, 25-11.
Lincoln continued to compete in the second frame, recording six kills and improving its hitting percentage from the opening set. Goldey-Beacom maintained its offensive rhythm, however, to earn a 25-15 victory.
The Lions delivered their strongest offensive performance in the third set. Lincoln totaled nine kills—its highest mark of the match—and posted a .129 hitting percentage. The visitors continued battling until the final point before Goldey-Beacom closed the match with a 25-17 decision.
