Lincoln Falls to Shaw in CIAA Opener

DURHAM, N.C. – The Lincoln University (Pa.) football team produced 362 yards of total offense and scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the Lions fell to Shaw University, 49-27, in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener Saturday afternoon at Durham County Memorial Stadium.

Lincoln dropped to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while Shaw improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA.

Inside the Numbers
Jayden Triplett (Elkton, MD/Elkton HS) completed 17-of-25 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Kyrie Tyson (Elkton, MD/Elkton HS) delivered his strongest performance of the season, recording nine receptions for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Kendu Brown (Brooklyn,NY) added a touchdown reception, while DJ Piner contributed a 38-yard catch.

Lorenzo Robinson (White Plains, NY) led Lincoln's rushing attack with 57 yards on 14 carries. Dexter Baptism added 41 yards and a touchdown on five attempts as the Lions finished with 129 rushing yards.

Defensively, Charles Thompson (Chester, PA/Stem Academy) recorded a game-high 13 tackles, including one tackle for loss. Zion Knox (Philadelphia, PA) finished with 10 tackles and a tackle for loss, while Kieron Pender (Los Angeles, CA) added five stops, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Brandon Robinson (Lithonia, GA/Martin Luther King, Jr. HS) registered four tackles and a pass breakup.

Shaw totaled 483 yards, including 335 on the ground. The Bears also capitalized on four Lincoln turnovers.

How it Happened
The Lions opened the game with a seven-play, 65-yard scoring drive. Jayden Triplett (Elkton, MD/Elkton HS) connected with Kyrie Tyson (Elkton, MD/Elkton HS) for a 14-yard touchdown, and Armando Avril (Hillside, NJ) added the extra point to give Lincoln a 7-0 advantage.

Shaw answered with three consecutive rushing touchdowns and carried a 21-7 lead into halftime. The Bears extended their advantage to 28-7 early in the third quarter before Lincoln responded with an eight-play, 72-yard drive. Dexter Baptism completed the possession with a four-yard touchdown run, trimming the deficit to 28-14.

The Bears scored the next two touchdowns to build a 42-14 advantage, but Lincoln continued to battle. Triplett found Kendu Brown (Brooklyn,NY) for a 14-yard touchdown with 10:48 remaining in the fourth quarter.

After the Lincoln defense forced a turnover on downs, Triplett connected with Tyson for a 68-yard touchdown on the next play. The score pulled the Lions within 42-27 with 8:12 remaining. Shaw closed the scoring with a touchdown in the final two minutes.

Lincoln returns home Saturday, September 26, to host Bluefield State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at LU Athletics Stadium.
