LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Former Lincoln University (PA) standout
Kai Gray continues to make the most of his opportunity at the professional level, helping the
DC Defenders make a
postseason run during the 2026 United Football League (UFL) season.
After establishing himself as a key contributor in the Defenders' secondary throughout the season, Gray elevated his play in the postseason, recording
nine tackles, four pass breakups, and two interceptions over the team's playoff run. His recent performances have showcased the same physicality, instincts, and playmaking ability that made him one of the CIAA's top defenders during his time with the Lions.
Gray arrived at Lincoln for the 2022 season and immediately made an impact under then-head coach
Josh Dean. In just one season, the defensive back totaled
82 tackles, four forced fumbles, and seven pass breakups, earning
CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors while becoming one of the conference's premier defensive players.
His standout campaign at Lincoln opened the door to the professional ranks, where he signed with the
Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League. After spending two seasons in the CFL, Gray joined the DC Defenders ahead of the 2026 UFL season and has continued to prove himself against some of the league's top talent.
For Director of Athletics
Josh Dean, Gray's success comes as no surprise.
"We were fortunate to have a talent like Kai Gray come through our program," Dean said. "From the moment he arrived at Lincoln, you could see his work ethic and determination to become the best football player he could be. He embraced coaching, worked to improve every day, and earned everything that has come his way."
Dean's connection to Gray's professional journey extends beyond his time coaching him at Lincoln. His father,
Vernon Dean, serves as the defensive backs coach for the DC Defenders, allowing him to continue following Gray's development firsthand.
"It's been special to watch Kai continue his career, especially with my dad on the Defenders' coaching staff," Dean said. "As a coach, you're always a fan and a supporter of your players long after they leave your program. One thing Kai will always have from me is support. I'm proud that he's continuing to pursue his degree while chasing his dream of playing professional football. His stamina, discipline, and commitment to becoming a better player have put him in position to succeed."
Gray's rise from
CIAA Defensive Rookie of the Year to the professional ranks serves as an inspiration for current and future Lions, demonstrating that hard work, perseverance, and dedication can create opportunities at the highest levels of the game.
As he continues to make an impact with the DC Defenders, the entire Lincoln University community proudly celebrates one of its own and looks forward to following the next chapter of his professional career.
