LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA (March 15, 2024) - In an electrifying confrontation that last took place on November 25, 2023, Lincoln University's Lions faced off against Gannon University's Golden Knights in what was a high-scoring and intensely competitive men's basketball game. Despite their valiant efforts, the Lions fell just short, with a final score of 97-93 in favor of the Golden Knights. This matchup was pivotal for both teams, who were initially predicted to finish 7th in their respective conference divisions, the CIAA for Lincoln and the PSAC for Gannon. The Thrill of the First Half From the moment the game began, it was clear that both teams were evenly matched. Their offensive prowess was on full display as they exchanged leads in a thrilling back-and-forth. With the score tied eight times, it was a battle for supremacy. Ethan Garita (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School), a standout from Trenton, N.J., led the Lions by scoring 14 of their 51 first-half points, demonstrating both skill and leadership. By halftime, the scoreboard read 51-51, signaling a tightly contested game that was anyone's to win. Second Half Surge The second half mirrored the intensity of the first, with Lincoln attempting to shift gears and pull ahead. Each possession became increasingly crucial as the Lions looked to extend their lead. However, Gannon's resilience and strategic play kept them in the game, turning Lincoln's brief leads into a desperate struggle for control. In the final moments, despite Lincoln's attempts to seize victory, missed opportunities and turnovers allowed Gannon to secure a narrow win, with the Lions trailing at 97-93. Lion Leaders Shine Despite the loss, several Lions made significant contributions. Ethan Garita (Trenton, N.J./Princeton Day School) scored 20 points, followed by notable performances from Peter Sorber (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic), Bakir Cleveland (Newark, N.J./University), Aidan Anderson (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape), Manny Toha (Newark, N.J./Marist), and Freddie Young, Jr. (Ewing, N.J./Trenton Catholic), each scoring in double digits. Young Jr.'s defensive play was also critical, leading the team with seven rebounds and three steals. Looking Ahead to the 2024 NCAA Division II Playoffs Lincoln has shown remarkable progress since their last encounter with Gannon, boasting a 14-9 record post-match and riding a three-game winning streak. Their recent triumph in the 2024 CIAA Championship, spearheaded by the outstanding play of All-CIAA and HBCU All-American Reggie Hudson (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's), along with CIAA Tournament MVP Peter Sorber (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic), has positioned the Lions as formidable contenders. As Lincoln prepares for their upcoming first-round matchup in the 2024 NCAA Division II Playoffs against Gannon, expectations are high.
