CHEYNEY, PA – The Lincoln University volleyball team registered 23 service aces en route to securing the straight-set victory, 25-9, 25-11, 25-8, over rival Cheyney in the Battle of the First Tuesday.
Sophomore
Haley Loper (Middletown, Del./St. Georges Technical) led the team with six aces, while sophomore
Jaida Lumpkin (Middletown, Del./Middletown) and freshman
Janaa Smith (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) registered five aces each.
Lincoln took the lead in the first set with six straight points with freshman
Laila Newborn (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) serving and then sealed the set with 14 of the last 16 points. The Lions scored seven of the first eight points, and 10 of the first 12 points, to race out to a quick lead. They sealed the second set with eight of the final nine points.
The third set was much like the first two as LU raced off to a quick start by scoring 11 of the first 13 points. Cheyney never recovered as the Lions finished off the match with 12 of the final 15 points.
Junior
Erica Taylor (Romulus, MI/Romulus Summit Academy) led the way with eight kills on 11 attempts with three errors (.455 hitting percentage), while Newborn added five kills on eight attempts with two errors.
Lumpkin dished out 13 of the team's 19 assists. She added two digs. Sophomore
Mariah Webster (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech/) registered a team-high five digs.
Lincoln (4-7 overall, 1-4 CIAA) returns to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association action 6 p.m. Thursday, traveling to Elizabeth City State.
