Freeman, Gray honored by CIAA

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Two Lincoln University football players have been honored by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) for their contributions to the comeback victory over Johnson C. Smith, the conference announced today (September 27, 2022).

Freshman quarterback Isaiah Freeman (Chester, PA/STEM Academy) earned Quarterback and Rookie of the Week, while senior Kai Gray (Newark, N.J./Saint Peters Prep) earned Defensive Back of the Week honors. It's the second time season Freeman picked up the rookie laurels from the conference.

"Isaiah Freeman (Chester, PA/STEM Academy) has been exceptional leading our offensive unit," said Lincoln University Head Football Coach Josh Dean. "He has been able to control the pace by being efficient as a passer and extending plays with his running ability. The most impressive thing about Freeman is his ability to take care of the ball. We have not had one turnover with him as Qb1. He is a natural leader and a pure baller; ideal Lincoln Lion."

He led the Lions to the 29-28 victory over Johnson C. Smith, including marching the team 72 yards on eight plays in 63 seconds to set up the game-winning field goal. Freeman finished with 318 total yards and accounted for all four touchdowns. He threw for 298 yards on 16-of-27 passing with three touchdowns.

Gray finished with 11 tackles, nine of which were solo, and a half tackle for loss to help the Lions to their second straight road victory.

"Kai Gray (Newark, N.J./Saint Peters Prep) has made an immediate impact on our defense," said Dean. "His versatility has allowed him to wreak havoc in the secondary and in the box. Glad to see his hard work get acknowledged as we feel he is on pace to win defensive player of the year."

Lincoln returns to action 1:30 p.m. Saturday, traveling to Winston-Salem State.
