COLUMBIA, SC – The Lincoln University baseball team scored 30 runs over two games in sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Benedict (Thursday, Feb. 24).
GAME ONE: LINCOLN 16, BENEDICT 1
Lincoln erupted for 14 of its 16 runs over the final three innings, including a seven-run sixth inning.
Freshman
Drew Darby (Union, N.J.) had a hand in both runs in the second inning with an RBI single in the second inning, and then was caught stealing on the backend of a double steal allowing senior
Justin McClain (New Castle Del./Del Castle Tech) to score from third.
The Lions combined for 12 hits with eight of the nine starters recording at least one hit. Freshman
Sebastian Iguaran (Port Orange, Fla./Spruce Creek), sophomore
Hilman Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West), and sophomore Jefrey Azcona all had multiple hits.
Truss was 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while senior Carvonte Williams also drove home three runs.
Freshman
Gabriel Sanchez (Anthony, N.M/Anthony), 2-1, earned the win – allowing one earned run on four hits in seven innings. He finished with a career-high eight strikeouts and just two walks.
GAME TWO: LINCOLN 14, BENEDICT 4
Lincoln dented the plate on all seven trips to the plate in completing the non-conference sweep with the 14-4 victory.
Seven of the Lincoln hitters recorded a hit and seven Lincoln hitters recorded an RBI, including four batters with multiple RBI.
Sophomore
Hilman Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) had his third multi-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman
Wesley Hogan (Washington, D.C./Maret) registered the first multi-hit game of his career with a three-hit performance with his first career homerun. He scored twice and had two RBI in the victory.
Junior
DeAndre Bowens (Rock Hill, N.Y./Monticello) went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI, while sophomore
Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore
Josiah Lara (Plant City Fla./Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) added a two-hit game with one run scored and an RBI.
Lara, 1-0, earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with a pair of strikeouts.
