The Lincoln University baseball team opened up a three-game series with Salem University on Thursday, playing a doubleheader at Frank Loria field in Nutter Fort, West Virginia. Lincoln dropped both games on the afternoon losing the first game 13-6 and then the nightcap 10-1.
Lincoln falls to 0-4 on the season. Salem improves to 3-5.
In the opener the Lions jumped out to a 5-1 lead, scoring all five runs in the second inning.
RJ Liverpool (Richmond, Va./Monacan) tripled home the first run and later scored on a passed ball. Max Guadalupe followed with a solo home run to make the score 3-1. Willie givens was hit by a pitch and scored on
Jordan Whisler's (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara Area) double. Whisler later scored LU's fifth run of the inning on an infield groundout by
Jordan Rorer (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham).
Salem added one run in the second and took a 6-5 lead following a four run third inning. Tyler Ault and Thirus Jones had the big blows for the Tigers, with each player hitting a two-run home run. Ault's came with nobody out and a runner on second while Jones blast came with one out and a runner on first.
The Lions tied the game at 6-6 in the top half of the fifth as
Jalil Banks (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) led off the inning with a triple and scored on
Kashif Hill's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) one out single up the middle. Hill stole second but would not advance any further.
The Tigers would break the tie in the bottom of the fifth as they scored four runs to take a 10-6 lead. Ault hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to cap the scoring in the inning. Salem added three more runs in the bottom half of the sixth to complete the scoring.
Marcos Castillo (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications) took the loss, pitching the final 2.1 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits while striking out two. Walker Dodero earned the win for the Tigers, striking out nine in five inning sof work while giving up all six Lincoln runs.
In the nightcap, Salem's James Wiseman allowed just two hits in six innings of work to earn a 10-1 win for the Tigers. Wiseman struck out eight and walked five batters.
The Tigers scored once in the first , twice in the third and five times in the fifth to take an 8-0 lead before the Lions got on the board in the sixth. Guadalupe walked with one out, stole second and scored on Grant Lindsay's single to center field.
Salem added two more runs in the sixth to round out the scoring.
Jordan Whisler (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara Area) took the loss for Lincoln, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs (four earned) while striking out five and walking three.
The Lions will conclude their three game series with Salem University with a single game on Friday, February 15, 2019. First pitch is at noon.
