Five players reached double figure scoring in Lincoln University's men's basketball contest against Winston-Salem State University but the host Rams jumped out to a big first half lead and maintained it throughout the second half as they handed the Lions an 84-70 loss at the Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The loss drops the Lions record to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. The Rams improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) led the Lions with 16 points while
Brendan Wagner (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic (Manor College)),
Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) and
Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) each chipped in 12.Â
Keynante Williams (Fredericksburg, Va./Rock Creek Christian Academy) rounded out LU's double-figure scorers with 11 points. Wagner led the team with eight rebound and three blocks.
WSSU's Robert Colon came off the bench to lead all scorers with 22 points, connecting on eight of ten shots from the field. Jaylen Alston added 15. Jonathan Hicklin and Mason Harrell added 10 points and six rebounds apiece.
The Rams used a 15-3 run in the first half to break an 8-8 tie and take a double digit lead midway through the half. Lincoln closed within ten on two occasions before the Rams closed out the half on a 25-9 run to take a 50-24 lead into the locker room.
A basket by the Rams to open the second half brought the lead the Lions slowly started to chip away at the lead, closing the gap to 17, 65-48 with 11:06 left but this would be as close as they would come until the final minute as the Rams lead oscillated between 17 and 21 points. Lincoln finished the game on a 7-1 run to close within 14 by games end.
Winston-Salem shot 55.8% for the game (29-52) while Lincoln made just 22 of 64 shots (34.4%). The lions held a slight 38-34 rebounding advantage and outrebounded the Rams on the offensive glass 16-5 leading to a 19-6 advantage in second chance points.
The men's basketball team returns to the hardwood on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 when they host Millersville University. Tipoff is at 7:00 p.m.
