Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) recorded his third consecutive double-double but the Lions late rally fell short as Virginia Union held on to beat Lincoln 78-75 at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Virginia Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Lions fall to 12-9 overall and 5-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. The Panthers improve to 11-8 overall and 7-2 in league play.
Â
Williams led four Lions in double figures with 18 points and 15 rebounds.Â
Cameron Campbell (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian) added 15 points while
Josh Page (Washington, D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy) came off the bench to score 11.Â
Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) added 10 points and eight rebounds.Â
Tamir Green (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution) dished out six assists.
Â
Terrell Leach led all scorers with 25 points while Will Jenkins added 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Demarius Pitts added 15 points and Eric Bowles led the team with seven assists.
The Lions came out strong in the first half, hitting eight of their first 12 shots to take a 17-9 lead just eight minutes into the game. VUU came right back with an 11-1 spurt to take a 20-18 lead. Lincoln continued to battle, forcing four more ties, the last at 32-32 with 29 seconds left in the half. Leach put in a jumper as time was expiring to give the Panthers a 34-32 lead at halftime.
Williams opened the second half with a layup to tie the score and following two VUU baskets the two teams exchanged field goals until Blue's layup brought the lions within one 42-41. The Panthers then ran off five straight points to open up a six point margin 47-41 forcing a quick timeout by the Lions.
Jordan Camper's (Chester, Pa./Chester) traditional three-point play cut the Panther lead to two 52-50 but a 14-7 spurt by the Panthers allowed the home team to open up a nine point lead 66-57.
Gevon Arrington's (Petersburg, Va./Petersburg (Richard Bland)) three-ball and a Campbell basket cut the lead to four at 66-62 with 5:56 left but that would be as close as the Lions would get until the waning seconds. Campbell sank a three-ball with 6 seconds left and the Lions forced a turnover to have a final shot to tie the game with 2.3 seconds left. Campbell's three point attempt was off the mark and the Panthers hung on for the 78-75 win.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 when they travel to Murfreesboro, North Carolina to take on Chowan University. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
