The Lincoln University men's basketball team concluded their North Carolina road trip with their third consecutive loss falling to Shaw University 87-70 Monday night at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Lions fall to 11-7 overall and 4-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. The Bears improve to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.
Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) led the Lions with 16 points and seven rebounds.Â
Cameron Campbell (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian) and
Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) added 11 points apiece.Â
Tamir Green (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution) led the Lions with eight assists.
Alex Owens led the Bears with 25 points and 15 rebounds. Amir Hinton added 23 points (14-14 FT) and dished out a team high eight assists. Geremy Taylor and Davon Dillard had 13 and 11 points respectively
Lincoln used an 12-2 run midway through the first half to reverse a five point deficit and take an early 18-13 lead. The Bears countered with a 1304 run to regain the advantage at 26-22 and built the lead as high as six before the Lions closed the gap to three at the half 39-36.
Blue's layup –and-one tied the game as the second half commenced and both teams exchanged baskets over the next three minutes before the Bears ran off five straight points to take a 48-43 lead. Campbell's three pointer cut the lead to three at 48-46 before the Bears went on a 19-6 uprising to take control of the game and build a 16 point lead, 67-51 with 8:44 left. Six straight free throws (four from Williams and two from Blue) closed the gap to ten at 67-57, but this would be as close as Lincoln would come as the Bears opened up a 22 point lead before the Lions scored the final five to make the final score 87-70.
The Lions shot 34.4% (22-64) from the field while the Bears made 50% (28-56) of their shots from the field. Lincoln struggled from beyond the arc making just 3 of 19 three point shots) SU 7-22) and were just 23 of 35 (65.7%) from the free throw line. The Bears dominated the glass, outrebounding the Lions 49-29 (18-16 on the offensive boards). The Lions committed just ten turnovers while forcing 22.  Â
The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 19, 2019 when they travel to play Bowie State University. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
