The regionally ranked Lincoln University men's basketball team dropped their second straight road contest Saturday afternoon, as a hot shooting Saint Augustine's squad handed the Lions a 72-62 loss at Emery Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The loss drops the Lions record to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. The Falcons improve to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in CIAA contests.
Saint Augustine's shot 66.7% in the second half connecting on 16 of 24 shots enabling the Falcons break a 52-52 tie and to pull away with a 20-10 run over the final 7:30 in the second half. SAU connected on five of nine three point shots in the period as well and finished the game shooting 57.9% (11-19) from beyond the arc and 59.1% (26-44) for the game.
The Lions meanwhile shot 43.8% from the field for the game and were led by
Cameron Campbell's (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian) 20 points. (7-12 FG, 3-6 3FG)Â
Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) added 11 points while
Tamir Green (Philadelphia, Pa./Constitution) and
Jordan Camper (Chester, Pa./Chester) chipped in nine apiece. Green led the Lions with seven rebounds while Williams added six.
Lincoln twice held an eight point lead in the first half, first at 24-16 following a 12-0 run and again at 30-22 after the Falcons had cut the lead in half. The Falcons scored the final five points of the period to close the gap to 30-27 at halftime.
The Falcons opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt to take their first lead since midway through the first half, 35-32. SAU pushed the lead as high as six before the Lions came back with a 7-0 spurt to retake the lead at 43-42 and pushed the lead to four 48-44. The Falcons again clawed their way back, tasking a 50-48 lead before the Lions roared back to tie the game at 52-52 on a pair of Green free throws with 7:30 left.
Lincoln's shooting then started to go cold as the Falcons' was firing up. Saint Augustine's embarked on a 20-10 run; hitting six of their final 11 shots while the Lions, who got good looks at the basket several times were unable to convert, making just two of their final ten shots. The Falcons increased their lead to as many as 14 in the final minutes before the Lions closed the gap to ten at the buzzer.
Jalen Gaddy led the falcons with 21 points while Tyre Gathright and Hirk Williams added 20 and 14 respectively.
The Lions will conclude their three game North Carolina road trip on Monday with a game against Shaw University. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
