Lincoln University, Pa. - The Lincoln University women's basketball team face another tough contest as they host West Chester University in their final game before the team has a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Series:
Tuesday's game will be the sixth meeting between West Chester and Lincoln's women's basketball programs and the first at Manuel Rivero Hall The Golden Rams lead the all-time series 4-1. WCU won the first four meetings beginning an 82-37 win in 2006-07. The two teams met in each of the next three seasons and then took a hiatus until the 2015-16 season when the Lions recorded a 64-54 win.
About the Lions:
Lincoln University enters Sunday's game with a 2-2 record after dropping a hard-fought 70-64 decision to regionally ranked Jefferson University on Sunday.
DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) led the Lions with 18 points (8-16 FG).
Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter (Temple)) and
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) added 12 and 11 points respectively. Reynolds also led the team with nine rebounds while Spencer dished out a game high six assists and had three blocks on the afternoon.
Through four games, Young leads the team, averaging 15.8 points per game while Reynolds and Spencer are also averaging double figures, scoring 10.8 and 10.5 points per game respectively.
Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) is the team's leading rebounder, averaging 12.0 per game. Spencer leads the team in blocks (6) and steals (7) while young has ten assists.
Machado became just the third Lincoln women's basketball player in the program's NCAA Division II history to record 17 or more rebounds in a game, joining teammate
Shahra Madison (Chesapeake, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School (Chesapeake College)) (19 last season vs. Bowie State (1/13)) and
Michelle Fitzgerald (Baltimore, Md./Md. Academy of Tech & Health Science (N.C. A & T)) (17 last season at Bowie State (2/7))
Lincoln opened their season with a 86-71 win over regionally ranked Kutztown University. Young exploded for 31 points in the win while grabbing nine rebounds. Edwards added 11 while
Jada Queen(Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) chipped in ten.
Edwards recorded her first collegiate double-double the next day as the Lions lost to Bloomsburg, 54-47. The freshman guard had 12 points and ten rebounds.
LU Weekly Honors: For her efforts in the Lions two games last week Edwards was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week. Edwards averaged 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 91.7% from the free throw line (11-12) and 35.3% (6-17) from the field.
Scouting the Golden Rams:
West Chester enters this contest coming off an 88-78 win over Salem on Saturday afternoon that was driven by four different Golden Rams scoring in double-figures for the first time in 2018.
Destiny Jefferson was the Golden Rams leading scorer as she poured in a career-high 24 points while also pulling down seven rebounds while teammate
Gabrielle Troisi registered her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman
Zhane Snow found her way into double figures as well scoring 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field while teammate
Katherine Fisher was the final Golden Ram to break into double-figures with 10 points and seven rebounds of her own.
Troisi is the Golden Rams leading scorer so far in 2018 averaging 17 points per game while also leading the team in rebounding averaging 10 rebounds per contest. Jefferson is close behind in points per game as she is averaging 16 points per contest while also leading the team in assists per game with 4.5 and steals per game with 2.0. Snow is averaging 11.8 points per game as well to open her collegiate career while also leading the team in three-point percentage shooting a solid 41.7 % (5-of-12) from three-point land to start her career.
The Golden Ram offense is averaging 75.3 points per game through their first four contests. WCU won their opening game against U.Va. – Wise before falling to then regionally ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) and nationally ranked USciences before evening their record at 2-2 with the win against Salem
