Box Score Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) poured in a career high 27 points as the Lincoln University women's basketball team held off a furious rally from rival Bowie State University to earn their sixth straight win, 70-64 Saturday afternoon before a large crowd at Manuel Rivero Hall.
The Lions are now 11-4 overall and 6-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games. The Bulldogs fall to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in league play. Lincoln is now 10-1 in their last 11 games and a perfect 8-0 at home.
Pendleton shot 9-for-14 from the field and made nine of ten shots from the free throw line en route to her career-high 27 points.Â
Shecquan Bailey (Salisbury, Md./Snow Hill (Baltimore City C.C.)) came off the bench to score 15 points, including six in the final 33 seconds to help seal the win.Â
Shahra Madison (Chesapeake, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School (Chesapeake College)) added 13 points (6-9 FG) and like a shark navigated the "dangerous waters" that were the lanes under both baskets to a tune of a career-high 19 rebounds, recording her fifth double-double of the season.
Pendleton's 27-point performance was the most in a game by a Lions player since Sharay Dubose had 27 against Shaw University of February 28, 2011. Madison's 19 rebounds were just two shy of the school record of 21 set by Mfon Ekanem against Ohio Valley on January 2, 2012.
Sade Chatman led the Bulldogs with 19 points and seven rebounds while Kyah Proctor and Kiara Colston added 15 and 12 respectively. Ty-Nita Baker came off the bench to score 12 points. The four players accounted for all but six of the Bulldogs 64 points.
Lincoln held a 15-point lead heading into the final quarter and extended that to 17 just three minutes in before the Bulldogs started to chip away at the lead. Bowie State scored eight straight points in just under a minute's time to reduce the lead to single digits at 56-47 with 6:06 left. The Lions still held a nine point lead 62-53 with 2:54 left when the Bulldogs went on another run of eight straight points, closing the gap to one at 62-61 with 55.5 seconds to go, taking advantage of three LU turnovers.
On the Lions next possession,
Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) found Bailey wide open in the left corner and the senior guard made the Bulldogs pay knocking down a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to put LU back up by four 65-61.  Colston matched Bailey with a three-ball of her own and it was again a one point game. A quick inbounds by the Lions followed and Bailey found Pendleton all alone underneath for a layup and a three-point Lion lead. Bailey then came up with a big steal with just under ten seconds remaining and took the ball the length of the floor for a layup and got fouled on the play. She converted the 'and-1" to round out the scoring as the Lions held on for the win, 70-64.
The two teams got off to a slow start as both offenses were as cold as the temperature inside Manuel Rivero Hall with the Lions shooting 16.7% from the field and the Bulldogs slightly better at 30.8%. Free throws kept the Lions close in the quarter, making six of eight as they trailed 12-10 after one period. Â
Lincoln's shooting improved in the second quarter as they outscored Bowie State 21-9 to take a ten point lead at halftime 31-21. The Lions connected on seven of 13 shots from the field (53.8%) in the quarter. Lincoln extended the lead to 17 midway through the third quarter and was ahead by 15, 52-37 at quarter's end.
The Lions finished the game shooting 47.1% (24-51) from the field and 64.3% (18-28) from the free throw line.  Bowie State shot 37.7% (23-61) from the field and 88.2% (15-17) from the free throw line. The Lions held big rebounding advantage 48-25, marking the third time this season that the team has outrebounded an opponent by 20 or more rebounds (all wins).  The Bulldogs committed just 13 turnovers to LU's 25 and outscored the Lions in the points-off-turnovers category, 25-16.
The women's basketball team is idle until Saturday, January 20, 2018 when they travel to North Carolina face Elizabeth City State University. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m.
