Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lions Dominant in 6-0 Win over Trinity

Cleo Spear (Sydney, NSW, Australia/Oxford Falls Grammar School) and Diana Martinez (Kissimmee, Fla./St. Cloud) scored two goals apiece as the Lincoln University women's soccer team turned in a dominant performance with a 6-0 win over Trinity Washington University Saturday afternoon at Lions Stadium.

The Lions improve to 3-4 on the season while the Tigers fall to 1-3.

Lincoln goalkeeper Lena Rodriguez (Lockport, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) earned her second shutout of the season, improving her record to 3-4 and lowering her goals against average to 3.27.

Lincoln spent much of the first half on offense recording five shots on goal in the first 17 minutes of action.  The Lions finally got on the board in the 37th minute when Tara Brookins (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) took a cross from Spear and put it past Tiger goalkeeper Vanessa Ramirez for a 1-0 lead.   Spear made the score 2-0 as time was winding down in the half, taking a pass from Cedar Davidson (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada/Aurora) and banging a shot off the left post which ricocheted off and behind the Tiger keeper.  Lincoln finished the period with a 14-1 advantage in shots taken.

Senior Taylor Brantley (Monmouth Junction, N.J./South Brunswick)'s first goal of her career made the score 3-0 in 61st minute.  Less than three minutes later Serena Melendrez (Las Cruces, N.M./Las Cruces), who assisted on the Brantley goal, was tripped inside the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Lions.  Martinez made the kick for her fifth goal of the season and a 4-0 Lions lead.

Martinez and the rest of the Lions continued the pressure on the Trinity defense, adding another goal at the start of the 70th minute, this one off the foot of Martinez, her second of the game and sixth of the season.

Spear rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the game, receiving a cross pass from freshman Jasmide Bernard (Lancaster, Pa./McCaskey) in the 84th minute and one-timing it past the Tiger goalkeeper, providing the final 6-0 margin.

The Lions held a 24-1 advantage in shots including 15 on-goal (zero for Trinity).  Lincoln also held the Tigers without a corner kick 6-0.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 when they host Shaw University at Lions Stadium.  Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
