Hawks Record Decisive Wins as they Complete Four-Game Sweep of Lions

Chowan University baseball exploded for 42 total runs as they completed their four game sweep of Lincoln University with two wins on Sunday, 24-4 and 18-6 at Hawkins Field in Murfreesboro, North Carolina.

The Lions fall to 5-24 overall and 1-11 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  Chowan evens its record at 19-19 and improved to 10-3 in league play.

Lincoln starter Orlando Roberson (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley HS) took the loss for Lincoln in the opener, lasting just 1+ inning and allowing ten runs on seven hits while striking out two.  Yasser Ortiz (Carolina, P.R./Juan Jose' Osuna) took the loss in relief in game two, pitching 2/3of an inning, allowing nine runs (five earned) on five hits.  DeVante Parker started game two and gave up five runs on five hits while striking out six over 4.2 innings pitched.  Roberson falls to 0-5 on the season while Ortiz is now 1-3 on the year.

Emory Chopp (1-1) earned the win for Chowan in the opener, tossing 4.0 innings and allowing all four Lincoln runs on six hits.  Vinny Puma (2-0) got the win in relief for the Hawks in the nightcap, pitching the final 1.2 innings and holding Lincoln scoreless.

Parker had three of the Lions six hits in the opener and scored a run.  Marquis Coleman (Middle River , Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) drove in two runs with a double in the fourth.  Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) also doubled in the same inning.   Julian Bradshaw (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation HS) and Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) also drove in runs.

Sherman-Johnson hit his first home run of the season and his career in game two, a solo shot in the third inning while Roberson, getting a rare start in the field as a position player, drove in two runs with a double in the sixth.  It was his first career hit and RBI's. Freshman Rolando Alvarez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional HS) also got a rare start as a position player and recorded his first career hits, singles in the second and sixth innings.

Four Chowan players hit home runs in the opener.  Marquis Lanier put the Hawks first runs on the board with a two-run shot in the first.  Harry Markotay and Zack Cooper added three run shots in Chowan's nine-run second inning and Marv Harrell hit a solo home run in the fourth.  Cooper and Harkotay both went 3-4 with five RBI in the opener.  Lanier was 4-4 with three RBI and Trent Brosdahl was 3-3 with three RBI.

Aaron Flanagan blasted a grand slam home run in the sixth inning of game two to finish the game with four hits and five RBI.  Julian Lopez added three hits while Harrell had two and also drew three walks.

In game two the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead  on two-out RBI singles from Bradshaw and Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy).  Sherman-Johnson's home run in the third put the Lions up 3-0.

Two hits and four walks in the  bottom of the third plated three Chowan runs, tying the game at 3-3.  Flanagan was hit by a pitch to start the fourth, moving to third on a Lopez single.  The two runners than pulled off a double steal as Flanagan scored, giving the Hawks a 4-3 lead.  Flanagan's RBI double in the fifth made the score 5-3.

Coleman laced a one-out double for the Lions in the top half of the sixth to close the gap to one 5-4 and after a pitching change by the Hawks, Roberson smacked a double down the right field line scoring Alvarez and Coleman to give the Lions a 6-5 lead.

The floodgates opened for the Hawks in the bottom of the sixth as they sent 16 men to the plate, scoring 13 times to pull ahead 18-6.  Three walks and a hit by pitch brought home the tying run and a two-base outfield error led to three more runs.  Flanagan's grand slam capped off the scoring in the inning.

Ortiz was hit by a pitch in Lincoln's final at-bat before Puma retired the final two batters to end the game.

In the opener the Hawks put up crooked numbers in each of the first three innings, scoring seven times in the first, nine in the second and six in the third to put the game away early with a  22-1 lead.

Coleman's double in the fourth brought homer two Lion runs.  Bradshaw then drove in Coleman with a single to make the score 22-4.

Harrell's home run made it 23-4 in the fourth inning and the Hawks added one more run in the sixth to complete their scoring.

The Lions return to action on "Friday, April 14, 2017 when they host Philadelphia University in a non-conference doubleheader.
