Lions Lose a Pair of Games to Rams

The Lincoln University baseball team struggled to get their bats on track Friday afternoon as they dropped a pair of non-conference games at Philadelphia University, 15-0and 18-1.

The Lions fall to 5-26 overall with the two losses, extending their losing streak to 18 games.  The Rams improve to 12-21 with the two wins.

Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) had two of Lincoln's five hits in the opener and Joshua Roberson (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley HS) and Julian Bradshaw (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation HS) each hit a double but were unable to string their hits together to produce a run.  Orlando Roberson (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley HS) took the loss for Lincoln, falling to 0-6 on the season.  He gave up 12 runs on 12 hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

Brandon Quaranta and Dan Klusman both hit home runs for the Rams in the opener.  Klusman finished the game with four RBI and Richard Joa went 4-4.  Casey O'Donnell (3-5) earned the win, pitching five innings and allowing all five Lincoln hits.

Klusman sent his blast over the left field wall in the first inning, staking the Rams to a 3-0 lead.   Roberson retired PU in order in the second and Quaranta's two-run shot in the third made the score 6-0.

The Lions had two hits in the top half of the fourth as Josh Roberson led off with a double down the left field line and Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) followed with an infield single not allowing Roberson to advance.  O'Donnell got Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) to ground into a fielder's choice before Michael Howard (Bronx, N.Y./Utica College) struck out to end the threat.

The Rams blew the game open in the fourth with five runs and added another in the fifth and three more in the sixth to account for their 15-run total.

Bradshaw's double in the fifth was the Lions last hit of the game.  Lincoln did load the bases via walks with nobody out in the sixth but left all three runners stranded when Rams reliever Abraham Almonte struck out Howard and Marquis Coleman (Middle River , Md./Baltimore Polytech HS) to end the inning.

The Lions managed just two hits in the nightcap, singles by Bradshaw and Josh Roberson.  Rolando Alvarez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Nazareth Regional HS) took the loss, falling to 2-6 on the season.  He gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits while striking out two.

Klusman hit two more home runs to finish the game with six RBI.  He went 5-6 with 10 RBI in the two games.  Matt McGee and Timothy Brodhag also hit home runs for the Rams.  Jonathan Gottschall (3-1) picked up the win, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four.

The Rams scored at least two runs in every inning, tagging Alvarez for the first eight in the first three innings while Sherman-Johnson let up ten in the final three innings.

Staked to an early 4-0 lead Gottschall retired the first eight batters before Bradshaw laced a single up the middle to break the ice but was left stranded.

Alvarez gave up four runs in the bottom of the third and a leadoff home run to Klusman in the fourth to give the Rams an 9-0 lead. Sherman-Johnson came on to pitch after the Klusman home run and gave up a pair of unearned runs in the inning.

McGee's two-run home run highlighted a three-run fifth inning for the Rams while Klusman and Brodhag hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth.  Klusman's blast, his second of the game was a three-run shot to left field.

Josh Roberson singled and advanced to second to start the seventh for the Lions.  He went to third on an infield groundout and later scored the Lions lone run when Coleman reached on a two-out infield error by Ram shortstop Joe Iannuzzi.

The Lions and Rams will play two more games on Saturday, with the Lions being the home team.  The games will be played at West Oxford High School and will start at 1:00 p.m.
