Philadelphia University completed the season series sweep of the Lincoln University baseball team on Saturday with a pair of wins 12-4 and 12-6 at the Oxford High School baseball field in Oxford, Pennsylvania.
Â
The two losses extend the Lions winless streak to 19 games as they fall to 5-28 on the season. The Rams improve to 14-21.
Â
Lincoln's top pitcher Terrence Berry did not have his good stuff in Saturday's opener, allowing all 12 runs (eight earned) in just 4.1 innings pitched. The senior right hander struck out just two batters and walked five and fell to 2-4 on the year.
Â
Berry's battery-mate catcher
Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, N.Y./Mount Saint Michael Academy) had two of the Lions six hits while
Julian Bradshaw (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation HS) drove in two runs.
Â
The Rams blasted four home runs all over the short right field fence. Two of those came off the bat of Steve Wells. Dave McTaggert and Steve Broadhag also went deep for the Rams. Wells and McTaggert finished the game with three RBI apiece. Gunnar Hayes earned his first win of the season for PU, pitching three innings in relief of Richard Joa and allowing just one run on two hits.
Â
Wells led off the second with a home run to right field off Berry and after a walk to Dan Klusman, Brodhag hit a two-run blast to make the score 3-0. The Lions got one back in the bottom half of the second following a 10-pitch at-bat by
Julian Bradshaw (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation HS) culminating with a single to drive in
Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech HS).
Â
A walk followed by a two-run home run by Wells in the third and an RBI single from Matt McGee made the score 6-1. In the bottom half of the third,
Joshua Roberson (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley HS) singled home
Aiden Gomes (Bronx, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) to make the score 6-2. Two batters later Lincoln had the bases loaded with one out but was unable to produce another run.Â
Â
McTaggert  gave the Rams a 9-2 lead with a three run home run in the top half of the fourth and added three more unearned runs in the fifth to take a 12-2 lead and end Berry's day on the mound.
Â
The Lions got a one-out triple and an RBI groundout from Bradshaw in the sixth inning and an RBI groundout from Santiago scoring
Luis Nieves (Staten Island, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) with the final Lincoln run.
Â
In the nightcap,
Yasser Ortiz (Carolina, P.R./Juan Jose' Osuna) also struggled with his control, walking seven in four-plus innings pitched as the Rams again posted a dozen runs, defeating the Lions 12-6.
Â
Eight of the 12 runs allowed by Ortiz were earned. He also struck out three and falls to 1-4 on the season.  Bradshaw and Howard each drove in two runs. Sherman-Johnson, Howard and Bradshaw all recorded extra-base hits in the loss, with Sherman-Johnson's double and Bradshaw's triple coming in the Lions' two-run fourth inning and Howard's double as part of LU's three-run sixth inning.
Â
C.J. Kilgariff earned the win for the Rams, pitching three innings of relief after starter Chris Navarro struggled through the first eight batters faced. Nick Goetz drove in three runs for the Rams and was one of three PU players with multiple hit games. Chris Lorenzo was 2-2 with two RBI and McGee also had two hits.
Â
For the first time in the series, it was the Lions who scored first, plating a single run in bottom half of the first inning.
Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a single from
Aiden Gomes (Bronx, N.Y./LaSalle Academy). The two runners pulled off a double steal before Nieves and
Joshua Roberson (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley HS) drew back-to-back walks to score Lashley and loading the bases with nobody out. The lions however were unable to add on to their run total and left all three stranded as the inning ended.
Â
The Rams took the lead in the third, taking advantage of three LU errors and scoring four times to lead 4-1 with a double by Wells producing the only Rams RBI of the inning. Goetz and McTaggert drove in runs during the Rams three-run fourth inning as the visitors opened a 7-1 lead.Â
Â
In the bottom of the fourth Santiago singled to lead off the inning and moved to third on Sherman-Johnson's double. A sacrifice fly by Howard scored Santiago and two batters later Bradshaw hit a long triple to right field to score Sherman-Johnson and cut the deficit to 7-3.
Â
The Rams loaded the bases with nobody out in the fifth before a walk to Andres Valbuena and  singles from Lorenzo and Goetz brought home five more PU runs, gave the Rams a 12-3 lead and ended Ortiz' day.Â
Marcos Castillo (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications) came in and retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Â
The Lions added three runs in the sixth, the first coming off the bat of Howard who doubled into left center field to score Santiago. Coleman and Bradshaw followed with RBI groundouts to make the score 12-6.
Â
Castillo held the Rams scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings but Lincoln could do no further damage after their three-run sixth and finished the game on the short end of a 12-6 score.  Castillo faced 10 batters in relief, striking out two and allowing just one base runner, a single in the sixth inning.
Â
Lincoln returns to action on Wednesday when they host regionally ranked Lock Haven University for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
