Box Score Three players reached double figures for the Lincoln University women's basketball team as they fought valiantly against nationally ranked Virginia Union University, losing to the Panthers 91-57 at Barco-Stevens Hall Saturday in Richmond, Virginia.
The Lions fall to 5-13 overall and 3-6 in central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games. The Panthers, ranked #2 nationally, improves to 17-0 on the season and 8-0 in league games.
She'cquan Bailey (Denton, Md/Baltimore City CC) led the Lions with 18 points (7-15 FG, 4-9 3FG) and six rebounds.Â
Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) added 11 points and six free throws while
Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) kicked in an even ten points and five boards. Bailey led the team with four assists.
Jayda Luckie led the Panthers with 22 points while Alexis Johnson chipped in 19 points, ten rebounds and seven blocks. Lady Walker added 16 points, ten rebounds and three blocks.
The Lions kept the game close for much of the first quarter, grabbing the early lead thanks to three pointers from Bailey (2) and Davis. VUU used a 5-0 run to take a 19-14 lead midway through the quarter before a 10-5 run by the Lions tied the game at 24-24. The Panthers however sank three three-pointers in the final 1:15 to take a 33-24 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Panthers used a 14-5 run to open the second quarter and double their lead to 18, 47-29 before Lincoln closed the gap to 14 at halftime, 48-34, scoring five of the final six points of the period.
Virginia Union scored the first seven points of the third quarter before three straight buckets from
Monique Cheek (Teaneck, NJ/Harford Community College) closed the gap to 15 at 55-40. This would be as close as the Lions would get the rest of the way as the Panthers closed out the quarter with a 14-5 flourish to lead by 24 at the end of three quarters. The Panthers outscored the Lions 22-12 in the fourth quarter to close out the game.
The Lions finished the game shooting 27.9% (17-61) from the field and 64% (16-25) from the free throw line. Virginia Union shot 49.3% (35-71) from the field and 56.0%(14-25) from the free throw line. VUU outrebounded the Lions 52-38, which included 21 offensive boards. The Panthers outscored the Lions 27-9 in the second chance points category and 25-15 in the points off turnovers statistic, committing 19 turnovers to VUU's 16.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 when they travel to Murfreesboro, North Carolina to take on the Hawks of Chowan University.
