Lions Cruise to First Win of Season

Lincoln University's women's basketball team placed four players in double figures as they controlled the tempo from the opening tip and handed Gannon University a 66-40 loss in the final game of the CIAA/PSAC Challenge held at Manuel Rivero Gym on Lincoln's campus Saturday evening.
 
The win evened the Lions record at 1-1 while Gannon falls to 0-2.
 
Amanda Okadugha, on the strength of a 7-10 performance from the free throw line led Lincoln with 13 points.  Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) came off the bench to score 12 points (4-7 FG).  Her performance coupled with yesterday's double-figure effort in LU's loss to Millersville earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
 
Joining Okodugha and Logan in double figures were Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) and McKenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico).  Davis scored 11 points (3-5 3FG) while Spencer chipped in ten, her second straight game scoring in double figures.  She'quan Bailey led the Lions with six rebounds and five assists.
 
Gannon's Maggie Mitchell also earned a spot on the All-Tournament team with a 14 –point effort.  She was the lone Golden Knight in double figures.  Millersville's Celeste Robinson was named the tournament MVP.
 
The Lions held the Golden Knights to just 2-13 shooting in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 19-9 lead after one period of play. Seven different Lincoln players put points on the board in the first period with Spencer the only Lady Lion to make more than one basket.
 
Logan scored the first five points of the second quarter as the Lions opened a 15-point lead 27-12 at the 5:25 mark on the strength of an 8-3 spurt to start the period.  Gannon would scored just two more field goals in the period as Lincoln pushed their lead to 19, 35-16 at halftime.
 
Gannon had their most productive quarter of the tournament in the third period, outscoring Lincoln 20-17 to close the gap to 52-36 with just ten minutes remaining. Okodugha scored the first four points of the quarter to push the lead up to 23,39-16 before a 9-2 Gannon run cut the lead to 16 and prompting a timeout by LU Head coach Darrell Mosley to regroup his team.  Lincoln however had a 9-2 run of their own after the Golden Knights pulled within 14 on a Mitchell trey, pushing the margin up to 21, 52-31 with 1:41 left in the period.  Gannon scored the final five points of the period, making the score 52-36 as the teams entered the fourth and final period.
 
The Lions defense took over again in the fourth quarter, holding Gannon to single digit scoring, allowing just one field goal and two free throws.  The Lions outscored the Golden Knights 14-4 in the period as they pulled away to win 66-40.
 
For the game, the Lions held Gannon to just 13 field goals (48 attempts, 27.1 FG%) while connecting on 21  of 53  themselves (39.6%).  LU doubled up on Gannon 8-4 on three-point field goals made and shot slightly better than Gannon  at the free throw line 72.4% (16-22) to 71.4% (10-14).   Gannon had a slight edge on the glass while the Lions turned in a much better assist/turnover mark (16/21) than Gannon (10/26).
 
Lincoln returns to action on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 when they host University of the Sciences at Rivero Gym at 5:30 p.m.
