Lions Fall Victim to Long Ball in loss to USciences

The Lincoln University women's basketball team fell victim to the long ball Wednesday night as University of the Sciences sank ten three-pointers and cruised to a 61-46 win at Manuel Rivero Hall.

The Lions fall to 1-2 while USciences, ranked #5 in the most recent D2SIDA East Region poll improved to 3-0.

McKenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) and Ashley Paynes-Hightower (Peoria, Ill./Harford Community College) led the Lions with 11 and 10 points respectively.  Diamond Mickle (Philadelphia, Pa./Paul VI (Va.) (Harford C.C.)) had a team-high six rebounds and Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) dished out three assists.

The Devils were led by Colleen Walsh.  Walsh shot 7-11 from three point range and finished the night with 23 points.  Micah Morgan added 12 to join Walsh in double figures.  Molly Greenberg led all players with eight rebounds and four assists.  Sarah Abbonizio also dished out four assists.

Neither team led by more than three points in the first quarter with Walsh's second triple of the game putting the Devils up three 12-9 as they headed into the second quarter of action.

Sciences scored the first four points of the second quarter to push the lead to seven before an 8-4 run highlighted by two three-pointers of their own by LU's Kholby Oliver (Bowie, Md./Tallahassee Community College) and Spencer shaved the lead back down to three at 20-17.  The Devils then went on a 12-2 uprising, connected on four three-pointers in their next five possessions to push their lead to double figures 32-19 with 2:33 to go in the period.  Jaeda Davis (Milwaukee, Wis./ Rufus King HS) added a traditional three-point play and She'quan Bailey sank one of two from the charity stripe to pull Lincoln within nine 32-23 at the half.

Bailey's triple to open the third quarter made it a two possession game, at 32-26.  Sciences followed with a 15-4 spurt to push their lead to 17, 47-30 with 1:39 left in the period. Spencer added a layup as the period wound down and Amanda Okodugha (Norrköping, Sweden/Young Harris College) had a layup to open the fourth quarter, cutting the Devils lead to 13, 48-35. 
Walsh then started a 13-3 Devils run with her sixth three-pointer of the game and later finished it with her seventh and final triple, giving USciences a 61-38 lead with 3:27 left in the game.  Spencer had the three points for the Lions during the run, sinking a trey with 3:57 left.  Lincoln scored the final eight points of the game to make the final score somewhat more respective, 61-46.

Neither team shot exceptionally well, with the Devils holding the advantage 33.9% (19-56) to 30.8% (16-52).  Sciences also outscored the Lions 30-18 from beyond the arc and connected on 65% (13-20) of their free throws (LU, 8-14 (57.1%)).  The Devils held a 42-38 advantage on the boards and committed three fewer turnovers (13-16).

Another regionally ranked team awaits the Lions on Saturday as they host Philadelphia University, rented 10th in the most recent D2SIDA East Region poll.  Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
