Seniors Take the Mound in CIAA Double Header Against VSU

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – Senior pitchers Demetrius Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Murrell Dobbins HS) and Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) in addition to Outfielder/Pitcher Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS), were honored in a double header against Virginia State University on Sunday, April 19th at the LU Baseball Complex.

Lincoln opened Senior Day led by pitcher Demetrius Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Murrell Dobbins HS) on the mound. Robinson had three strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched against the Trojans. Freshman Crae Watkins (Lorain, OH/Brookside HS) went 3.2 innings striking out one batter and holding VSU scoreless.

The Lions scored in the fourth inning off of one hit by Charles Gibbons (Brooklyn, NY/Genesee CC). Gibbons singled to left field for the only Lions hit against the Trojans in game one of the double header. Virginia State scored one run in the first, three in the second, eight in the third and five runs in the fourth inning. Lincoln committed seven errors while the Trojans had 13 hits in a 17-1 win.

During the intermission of the double header, all three seniors on the team were acknowledged for their work throughout their careers.  Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS), whose season was cut short due to an injury earlier in the year, Robinson, and Smith were honored with their families and teammates.  It was a proud moment for Coach Pla as these were the members of his first full recruiting class since taking over the program.

Senior Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) took the mound in game two and carried the Lions with four strikeouts and one earned run. The game was scoreless through three innings until VSU scored a run off of two errors by Lincoln in the fifth inning. The Trojans extended their lead to 3-0 by the sixth inning and then capped their series sweep with two runs in the seventh inning.

Lincoln had three hits led by Latuan Boggerty (Dover, DE/Polytech HS)'s two and one by Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute). Terrell Berringer, Avery Lomax (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt HS), and Boggerty all stole bases as the Lions fall to 2-30 and 0-12 in CIAA play.

The Lions will host Benedict College in a double header at 1 p.m. at the LU Baseball Complex on Tuesday, April 21st.
