The Lady Lions (2-2-1) traveled to Salem West Virginia to compete against the Tigers of Salem International University. The game was originally scheduled to be played at the school but the site was changed to a nearby town. Upon arriving at the new site, the women's soccer team found themselves looking at a field that was lopsided natural grass with potholes and goal posts being held in place with bags of cement.
This didn't deter the team one bit. They were determined to get back on track after a disappointing loss to New York Institute of Technology earlier in the week. Then there was the late start of the game because one of the officials was working a game 300 yards away that had not ended.
Once the game started the Lion's proved they were up to the challenges that included the opponents on the field of play. The team made sharp passes and pressed early and often. Opportunities came and went quickly. There were shots on goal by just about everyone on the team, so much so that Captain
Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) said to one of her teammates "don't worry they will eventually go in". They did and the Lions were up 2-0 by the end of the first half with goals from
Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) and
Christian Harris (Rochester, NY/The Aquinas Institute).
The second half saw
Tara O'Brien (Twickenham London, UK/St. Mark's Catholic School) complete a hat trick and Christine Harris score once more to defeat the tigers 5-2. The team improved their record to 2-2-1 with a balanced attack that relaxed only after the win was assured late in the second half.
Coach Camperell was pleased with how his student athletes persevered and didn't let last minute changes a shoddy field and more than aggressive play from the Salem Tigers affect their game. At half time he spoke to the team and reminded them to not allow all the things they could not control take their minds off what they need to do to win. The team certainly responded and performed well as they produced their highest scoring output so far this season. Next up for the Lions is Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday at Lions Stadium. Game time is 4:00 pm.
