Lions to play five home games in new stadium

2012 Lincoln University Football Schedule

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.
– Lincoln University has released its 2012 football schedule that features Wofford College coming from the Football Championship Subdivision Southern Conference, Kentucky State from Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and rival Cheyney from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

The Lions will play host to five home games this season and will open the season on Saturday, Sept. 1 with the Battle of the First against rival Cheyney University. Last season, Lincoln dropped a heartbreaker on the road to the Wolves, 21-19.

The following week, the Lions stepped into the realm of FCS Division I action at Wofford on Sept. 8 in Spartanburg, S.C. This will be the first matchup between the two teams as the Terriers went 8-4 last season and lost to the University of Northern Iowa in the second round of the playoffs, 28-21.

Lincoln returns home on Sept. 15 to take on Kentucky State. Last season, the Thoroughbreds defeated the Lions, 43-27, in Frankfort, Ky.

CIAA play begins on Sept. 22 in Salisbury, N.C., as Livingstone meets Lincoln. The last time these two teams met was in 2009 as the Lions blanked the Blue Bears, 10-0. Livingstone went 1-9 last year with the lone victory coming against Virginia University of Lynchburg. The all-time series is tied at 1.

Johnson C. Smith comes to town on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Golden Bulls went 6-5 last season, including a 35-33 victory over Miles College in the Pioneer Bowl. This will be the first meeting in the series since Lincoln joined the CIAA. The all-time series is tied, 2-2.

The month of October opens with the Lions traveling to Richmond, Va., to take on Virginia Union. Last season, Lincoln jumped out to a 19-0 lead and held on for a 19-10 victory for the Lions' first CIAA win of the season. The Panthers lead the all-time series against the Lions, 23-11-2.

Elizabeth City State, who leads the series, 4-0, comes to town a week later on Oct. 13. The Vikings, who lost in the CIAA Championship game to Winston-Salem State last season, went 8-4 overall and 6-1 in conference action. ECSU ended Lincoln's season with a 39-14 victory.

The Lions conclude two of the final three games of the season on the road, first starting on Oct. 20 in Petersburg, Va., against Virginia State. The Trojans hold an 8-0 advantage in the series after defeating Lincoln, 21-16, last season.

The final home game in the new stadium will be memorable as  the 2012 Homecoming Game against Bowie State on Oct. 27. The Bulldogs, who have won four straight in the series, held off a third-quarter charge by the Lions in earning a 22-10 victory last season.

Lincoln closes out the season with a road game on Nov. 3 against Chowan. The Lions avenged a 30-27 loss in the series opener on 2010, 30-27, by defeating the Hawks, 31-15, in the 2011 Homecoming Game.
