Box Score LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University women's basketball team nearly rallied from as many as 13 points down in the second half, but the Lady Lions dropped a hard-fought CIAA Northern Division contest to Virginia Union, 45-41, on Monday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Sharay Dubose paced Lincoln (5-17 overall, 1-9 CIAA, 1-3 CIAA Northern Division) with 11 points, while
Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers HS) had a game-high 12 rebounds. The Lady Lions were 12-of-56 shooting for 21 percent.
Virginia Union (8-10, 5-4, 3-0) broke open a 12-all game with an 8-0 run to take a 20-12 lead 4:45 remaining in the first half after a Shahadah Barret jumper. Lincoln responded and closed the gap to 22-19 after a
Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) jumper with 1:47 left, but the Lady Panthers scored the final four points to take a 26-19 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Virginia Union took its largest lead of the game, 40-27, with 10:54 left as Valentina Wheeler scored on a jumper. Lincoln chipped away at the deficit and closed the margin to 43-41 after a pair of free throws by Denise Moore with 1:07 left.
However, a Vicki Collier bucket with 3.8 seconds remaining sealed the victory for the Lady Panthers.
Collier led Virginia Union with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Danielle Ferguson had nine points and 10 boards as the Lady Panthers shot 32 percent (21-of-65) from the field.
The Lady Lions return to action on Thursday, Feb. 2 at Manuel Rivero Hall against Virginia State University in a CIAA Northern Division contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Catch all the action through live stats at:
