CIAA slate opens with Saint Augustine's

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (January 6, 2011) —Tonight is a rather historic night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

This evening's doubleheader against Saint Augustine's College begins Lincoln's march toward the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. The week-long tradition begins Feb. 28 at the Times-Warner Arena in Charlotte, N.C., and this season marks the first time the Lions get to showcase their talents and compete for conference crowns.

The game can be streamed live on Lincoln's UStream home located here.

The battle for the regular season title begins tonight in the CIAA opener. For both the men's and women's teams, this could not have come at a more opportune time. Both squads are coming off of impressive wins, emphatically ending early season frustrations.

On Tuesday night in Takoma Park, Md., against Washington Adventist, the Lady Lions s(1-6) cored the game's first 10 points as Kisha Middleton picked up a win in her first try as head coach in a 78-51 victory. Brittney Waters paced the Lady Lions with a career-high 17 points while Tahlar McIntosh's 15 points and 10 boards resulted in her first-ever double-double. Freshman point guard Cynthia Johnson also had her first double-digit game with 12 points. Meanwhile, senior point guard Sasha Evans' five assists established a new career mark as well.

To earn a second-straight win, the Lady Lions need to contend with a potent Lady Falcons (6-4) team with four players in double figures. Keyona Bryant leads the way with 16.9 points per game (ppg) and 10.1 rebounds a game (rpg) while shooting .500 from the field.

The Lincoln men (1-6) have been off since a Dec. 15 win over Central State. The 70-57 victory was an offensive awakening while the defense continued to perplex opponents. Denzel Mooney had his third 20-point outing of the season with a game-high 23 points. Seniors Eugene Smith (19 points) and Emanuel Kakulu (8) and sophomore Richard Glover (12) had career highs.

Tonight, they face a 1-7 Falcons team that has struggled to score. Shaun Washum is the leading point scorer and rebounder with 11.4 and 5.9 averages, respectively.
