LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (January 24, 2011) – After much anticipation, Lincoln's first basket Monday night came on the two points Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) needed to get to 1,000 for her career.
Early in the first-half of her 68th game as a Lady Lion, the junior guard took a pass from Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) and banked it in from close. She was honored for the milestone with a short ceremony at the next deadball timeout. She would finish with a game-high 18 points, bringing her career total to 1,015.
The night highlighted Lincoln's 55-50 loss to Chowan University at Manuel Rivero Hall with the Hawks making the decisive plays late to pull away with the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division victory.
The stoppage of the game may have hurt the Lady Lions, who went down 11-4 early, but a big trey by DuBose got Lincoln back within four at 11-7 eight minutes into the game. The deficit seemingly stayed within four and six the majority of the half as the teams traded baskets and stops before DuBose heaved a shot at the buzzer from three-quarters court. She was fouled and made three foul shots with 1.4 seconds left in the opening period to put LU within 25-23 at the break.
Credit Lincoln's (1-14, 0-8 CIAA, 0-2 CIAA) defense for keeping it close. Shooting just 26.7 percent from the floor, the defense induced 14 CU turnovers.
The Hawks (7-9, 4-4 CIAA, 2-0 North) began the second half on a 9-3 spurt, but Dubose's fade away jumper got LU within five at 34-29. The next time down the floor, Cynthia Johnson (Randallstown, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) was fouled on a three attempt. Like DuBose, she made all three, making it a two-point game.
The freshman point guard did most of her damage at the line. She finished with 11 points, nine coming from the line on 13 attempts.
LU trailed by just two at 36-34 with 11 minutes to go following two more Johnson free throws, but Chowan hauled down several offensive rebounds and a put-back by Najah Harris sparked a 6-0 run to make the difference eight points.
Still though, Lincoln recovered with two Alease Tabb (Brooklyn, NY/Middle College High School) free throws and a clutch Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) pull-up 3-pointer, but at 42-39, that was the closest the Lady Lions got the remainder of the contest.
Still though, the night belonged to DuBose. Playing in front of her mother for the first time since she was 15, and a large contingent of other family members, the 5-foot-6 junior guard was beaming with pride much of the night as she displayed her talents.
Harris led the way for Chowan with 14 points.
