Box Score

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (January 20, 2011) A spirited start by the Lincoln University women's basketball team gave way to an impressive surge by Shaw  University Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall, as the Lady Lions fell, 89-60.

Playing in the final Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) crossover game with the southern division, the LU women could not have started any better. Their first 12 points came off 3s en route to a 21-7 advantage over the Lady Bears in the opening 9:20.

Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) spearheaded the onslaught, drilling three of her career-high four 3-pointers en route to 22 points, also a new personal best.

However, that 14-point advantage quickly dissipated as Shaw tied the game at 25-25 with 5:01 to go in the opening period when Victoria Tanner knocked down one of two free throws.

LU (1-12, 0-6 CIAA) responded with three consecutive points by Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) off a free throw and a nifty up-and-under spread over LU's next two possessions. Her 13 tallies bring her 24 shy of 1,000 for her career. The junior guard also finished with 10 rebounds for the double-double. Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) led Lincoln on the glass with 13 boards, tying a career high.

However, Brittney Spencer knocked down a jumper several minutes later to give Shaw a 30-28 edge. It was the visitors' first lead since a 2-0 advantage on the first possession off the opening tip.

After that point, the game was all Shaw. The Lady Bears translated 34 LU turnovers into 45 points while just turning the ball over 13 times themselves.

In addition to Lincoln's offensive power offered by Waters and DuBose, Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) contributed 10 points and seven boards.

Shaw, meanwhile, displayed a balanced, totaling four players in double figures led by Brittany Ransom with 20 behind three treys and 8-of-12 shooting. Kyria Buford offered 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds and five assists.
