Box Score

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (January 12, 2011) — Sophomore Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) tallied her first 20-point game Wednesday afternoon as the Lincoln University women's basketball team (1-9, 0-3 CIAA) delivered a scare to undefeated Johnson C. Smith, (10-0, 3-0 CIAA).

The Lady Lions showed little wear early despite two days of postponements, making up for the frustration by scoring the game's first seven points and led at late as seven minutes into the period. JCSU rallied at the Grady Cole Center and held home court, 68-57.

Waters' 20 points surpasses her previous career high of 17 set eight days ago in a win over Washington Adventist. LaQwesha Gamble led the Lady Golden Bulls with 12 points and eight rebounds.

LU showed little intimidation going against the CIAA's elite. Waters drained a three to begin the game, and less than two minutes later, she knocked down another, giving LU the 8-0 advantage. She finished with three bombs.

Shakeena Cunningham countered, scoring seven points in an 11-3 JSCU run to go ahead with 12:56 left in the opening period. By halftime, the margin bumped to 30-21 in favor of the Lady Golden Bulls.

The start of the second half resembled the first. LU pushed back, getting within four at 37-33 when Waters hit a foul shot after knocking down a jumper. Like the first half, though, JCSU responded and would increase the lead, this time to double digits.

Joining Waters in double figures was DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) with a season-high 14 points, besting the 12 she had in the season opener. She also surpassed the 900 points, bringing her career total to 902. She also led LU on the glass for the fourth time this season. Waters has now reached double figures in five-straight games.

Stellar defense allowed Lincoln to jump up early, holding the Lady Golden Bulls to 24 percent from the floor in the first half. Nineteen LU turnovers in the opening stanza allowed for the momentum swing. Lincoln was more efficient from the floor for the game, shooting 39 percent while JCSU was at 31 percent. Lincoln secured the ball better in the second half with just nine giveaways. JCSU played remarkably clean basketball, totaling 12.

Lincoln completes this road swing with a contest at Fayetteville State (1-10, 0-3 CIAA) in Felton J. Capel Arena. The game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
