Matthews records hat trick in win over SIU

Box Score

SALEM, W. Va. — Brian Matthews (Mount Vernon, Va./Mount Vernon) wouldn't settle for just his first-career goal, instead notching the hat trick in a 4-1 win over Salem International University.

For the Lincoln University men's soccer team, the three-goal game was LU's first since Adedotun Lateef Osho (Lagos, Nigeria/Plainfield) notched the trifecta on Oct. 16, 2008, versus Valley Forge Christian College.

“A couple of times this year, I thought I was about to get my first,” Matthews said. “But I wasn't able to strike the ball well. Osho told me to stay calm, and today I was able to put some goals away.”

Matthews received a pass from Osho that split two defenders, and Mathews raced upfield for the breakaway opportunity, reaching it in time to chip it over the goaltender.

The win is the second of the season for the Lions (2-6), who defeated the Lions on Sep. 26 at Lions Field. First-year head coach Anthony Plá, though, saw signs of the breakout performance.

“We had a good week of practice leading up to this,” he said “We possessed the ball solidly. We moved the ball really well and had a lot of scoring opportunities, and it was nice to put them away.

Osho, who had the assist on the Matthews' first goal, scored LU's second goal before Matthews tacked on his final two to complete the hat trick.
