LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (May 27, 2009) – Women's soccer player Stephanie Anderson (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area HS) and football standout Trey Thomas (Canton, GA/Woodstock) were named the 2008-09 Strength and Conditioning Student-Athletes of the Year. They were honored during the recent Lincoln University athletics banquet in April.
“There are very specific qualities that define a strength and conditioning student-athlete such as commitment, dedication, and discipline, which both student-athletes exhibited each time they entered the weight room,” strength and conditioning coordinator Darrell Locket said. “They also positively affected their teammates and coaches.”
Anderson enjoyed a season to remember for the Lady Lion women's soccer program by scoring a school record 14 goals. Anderson's effort helped the Lady Lions establish a school record for goals in a season with 33 and tie a program record for wins in a season with four. Anderson scored five goals in her first collegiate contest on Sept. 8 against Trinity. That performance helped Anderson become the first women's soccer player in Lincoln history to be featured in Sports Illustrated.
Overall, she finished with four multi-goal scoring games and three hat-tricks. She was also the first Lincoln women's soccer player to earn ECAC Offensive Player of the Week honors. She was spotlighted on NCAA.com and in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Anderson was honored at the annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Banquet in January.
Thomas sparkled on the football field for the Lions. A take-it-to-the-house threat every time he touched the ball, Thomas Lincoln in all-purpose yards (735), receptions (50), receiving yards (464), scoring (20) and touchdowns (three). If Lincoln were eligible to be ranked among the national leaders, Thomas would've ranked fourth in the CIAA in receptions. He caught a career high nine receptions for 125 yards against Livingstone
Against Southern Virginia, Thomas finished with a career-high 148 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He also had a 61-yard kickoff return against Fayetteville State. Thomas also led Lincoln in rushing in final two games of the season with 72 yards each against Virginia State and Saint Paul's. He had two games with 150 or more all-purpose yards: 161 vs. Livingstone (9-27) and 150 vs. Southern Virginia (9-6).
Both student-athletes return to lead their respective teams in the fall. Anderson and the Lady Lions begin the women's soccer season on Thursday August 27 against Chestnut Hill College. Thomas takes the field on Saturday August 29 when Lincoln battles rival Cheyney University at Northeast High School's Charlie Martin Stadium in Philadelphia.
