Balanced Lincoln has too many weapons for Briarcliffe in 82-67 victory

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (February 16, 2008) – Junior Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) enjoyed a perfect shooting game, freshman DeJuana Mosley tied her career-high in scoring and four Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball players reached double digits during an 82-67 victory over visiting Briarcliffe College Saturday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall. Mosley tied her career-high by scoring 22 points. It was the second time in three games Mosley hit for 22 points. Cook finished with 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the field. With her 3-pointer midway through the second half, Cook became the fifth Lincoln player this season with at least 10 made 3-pointers. Cook has scored in double digits for Lincoln in seven of her last eight games.

 

Senior Latoya Thompson (York, PA/William Penn) continued her recent strong play by scoring 12 points in nine exciting first half minutes. For Thompson, it was the first time in her career she has scored double figures in consecutive games. She is averaging 11 points in Lincoln's last two games. Senior Sharell McMillan (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) added to the Lions' season-high scoring total by finishing with 11 points.

 

Sophomore Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) contributed nine points and seven assists for Lincoln, which ended a three-game losing streak. Junior Angelle Green (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) chipped in with a career-high nine points. Lincoln (6-15 overall) forced 38 turnovers to defeat Briarcliffe for the second time this season and put the brakes on a three-game losing streak. Lincoln also collected 15 steals with Harris, McMillan and Mosley leading the way with three each.

 

Briarcliffe (9-8) received 17 points and nine rebounds from freshman Tabrese Harris and 16 points from freshman Leona Virgo.

 

The visiting Seahawks made Lincoln earn the victory. After trailing, 43-33 at intermission, Briarcliffe opened the second half with a 10-2 run to trim its deficit to 45-43 with 16 minutes, 48 seconds remaining. That's when Lincoln's offense got in gear. Cook scored five points during a 12-3 burst that opened Lincoln's lead to 57-46 with 11:15 remaining.

 

Lincoln continued its offensive barrage by scoring nine straight points during a two-minute period (a Cook jumper, Cook 3-pointer, Harris layup and Angelle Green (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) jumper) to open its largest lead of the game, 68-50, with 8:19 remaining. However, Briarcliffe refused to go away as it scored 14 of the game's next 18 points to slice Lincoln's lead to 72-64 with 3:47 remaining.

 

For the third consecutive game, Lincoln sprinted to an early double-digit advantage. The Lions rode the hot shooting of Mosley and Green to open a 23-11 lead midway through the first half. Lincoln led by 13 points against Newport News and 10 points against Wilmington in the opening 20 minutes. Thompson made two of her three 3-pointers in the final three minutes of the first half to help Lincoln take a 43-33 lead into intermission.

 

Lincoln continues its three-game home stand when it hosts Virginia Union Tuesday night beginning at 6:00 p.m. Lincoln defeated Virginia Union, 68-65, in Richmond on Thursday December 13.
