LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (February 6, 2009) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania athletics department held a “Lunch Bunch” with the 6th graders from the Great Valley School in Malvern, PA. (PHOTO GALLERY)
The purpose of the Lunch Bunch is to provide area youth with a greater appreciation of the opportunities and facilities available on the historic Lincoln University of Pennsylvania campus. Invitations are extended to elementary schools in the surrounding community.
Friday, February 6, 2009 was when the young group arrived with their chaperones. They were eager to take a look at what Manuel Rivero Hall had to offer as well as talk with the young student-athletes that gave them tours and signed autographs. The sixth graders were greeted by Francine Taylor the Head Women's Soccer Coach/Marketing and Promotions Coordinator. Coach Taylor introduced the Lincoln student-athletes and told them what the day was all about.
After the initial greeting, the student-athletes from Lincoln took the eager middle school students on a tour throughout the entire gymnasium. They all started in the auxiliary gym and scattered into groups from there. They then travelled to areas like the swimming pool, locker room, and the training room. When they went down to the training rooms, the children were greeted by Darrell “D-Lock” Locket who gave them a brief idea of what the training room does for the student-athletes. Some of the young students took bags of ice and some bandages as souvenirs.
One of the main parts of the day that everyone enjoyed was when they walked into the weight room, bowling alley, and main gym. There were students running on treadmills, lifting up some weights, riding stationary bikes, and pumping some iron. When they opened the door to the bowling alley, their eyes lit up as they were allowed to bowl a few frames with their chaperones and the student-athlete hosts jumping in here and there. When the students were in the main gym, they were running around the court like our track athletes do for practice and shot some hoops with some of the men's and women's basketball team members.
At around 12 noon, all of the participants came back into the auxiliary gym to get their gift t-shirts autographed by Lincoln University student-athletes as well as some coaches and everyone's favorite Mascot “LU” the Lion. The young students enjoyed some refreshing drinks and pizza as they asked the student-athletes to sign their shirts.
One of the main aspects of this Lunch Bunch was to give out two awards that Dominoes Pizza sponsors for local student-athletes from the Oxford Area. The two awards that were given out were to freshman football player and health science major Michael Marchand (Oxford, PA, Oxford Area) and junior women's soccer player and biology/pre-med major Adaeze Chikwem (Oxford, PA, Oxford Area).
