LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (November 15, 2008) – Freshman forward and human services major Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) scored a team-high 18 points to lead five players in double figures during Lincoln University's, 69-53 victory over Briarcliffe College in the first round of the Third Annual James A. Richardson Tip-Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Manuel Rivero Hall. (BOXSCORE)
Lincoln (1-0 overall) advances to Sunday's championship game against The College of Saint Rose (3:00 p.m.). The College of Saint Rose (1-0) defeated the University of the Sciences, 79-48, in the opening game (BOXSCORE). University of the Sciences (0-1) will meet Briarcliffe (0-1) at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game.
The College of Saint Rose received seven votes in the Division II ESPN/USA Today Top 25 pre-season poll.
Junior guard and health science major Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) scored all 12 of her points in the second half. It was the second time in three games Harris did all of her scoring against Briarcliffe in the second half. Harris scored 11 points in the second half to fuel a 68-59 victory over Briarcliffe last year in New York. Harris also added a team-high five points and four steals.
Sophomore finance major DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester), freshman guard and sociology major Britny Adams (Bloomingdale, MI/Bloomingdale) and senior accounting major Tanina Cook (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) (Landover, MD/Charles H. Flowers) scored 10 points each. Cook and freshman mass communications major Jasmine Jones (Philadelphia, PA/Academy Park) grabbed nine rebounds each for Lincoln.
Briarcliffe's Leona Virgo scored a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds. Elisha Raiford added 10 points for the Seahawks.
With Lincoln clinging to a 50-47 advantage with seven minutes, 44 seconds remaining, DuBose fueled an 11-2 burst over the next three minutes to help the Lady Lions take control of the game. DuBose scored four points, Harris had four points and Adams added three during the burst. Adams' 3-pointer gave Lincoln a 59-49 lead with 5:12 remaining. Lincoln's lead never dropped below double digits after that.
Lincoln held Briarcliffe without a field goal in the final seven minutes of the first half to open a 30-23 halftime advantage. Adams scored five consecutive points to break a 17-17 tie to give Lincoln a 22-17 lead with 4:49 remaining in the first half.
The tournament is named after the father of Lincoln University alum Tarron Richardson ('99). Richardson is the only player in school history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He ended his career with 1,512 points and 1,157 rebounds. Richardson's father, James was a faithful supporter of Lincoln University athletics. Richardson's father died in 2003 after a brief battle with cancer. Richardson dedicated his life to providing financial, housing, educational and athletic opportunities for the less fortunate in his hometown of Wilmington (Delaware).
