KUTZTOWN, PA. (January 9, 2008) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team dropped a 79-54 decision to Kutztown University at Keystone Hall Wednesday evening. (BOXSCORE)
Senior Asha Atkinson (Deptford, NJ/Deptford) led Lincoln in scoring with a season-high 16 points and five rebounds. Atkinson, who notched her 48th career double-digit scoring game, was 7-for-13 from the field. It was Atkinson's second straight contest reaching double figures. Also reaching double figures for Lincoln was freshman DeJuana Mosley (14 points) and sophomore guard Chanelle Harris (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) (10 points).
The loss ended Lincoln's three-game road winning streak. Lincoln's overall record dropped to 3-9. Kutztown evened its mark at 7-7.
Despite holding a pair of six-point advantages in the first half, Lincoln had trouble keeping pace with Kutztown in the rebounding department. The Golden Bears, who broke a four-game losing streak, outrebounded Lincoln, 60-24, and outscored the Lions, 26-2, on second-chance points. Lincoln's defense did force 26 Kutztown turnovers.
Atkinson sank a jumper to give Lincoln a 22-16 lead with 10 minutes, 45 seconds remaining in the first half. Kutztown scored nine straight points to take its first lead of the game, 25-22. Mosley tied the game with a 3-pointer. However, Lincoln would never lead again. Kutztown took the lead for good on a pair of Katie Dowey foul shots, 29-27, with 6:43 remaining in the opening half. Lincoln trailed. 43-33, at intermission.
The Golden Bears made 50 percent of their shots (30-for-60). Three players reached double figures for Kutztown: Melissa McQuaide (19 points, 13 rebounds), Meredith Star (12 points, six assists) and Mercedes Van Wagner (12 points, nine rebounds).
Lincoln finishes its three-game road trip with a visit to Cabrini College Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m.). It will be the first time in 16 years Lincoln and Cabrini will meet in a women's basketball game. Following the game against Cabrini, Lincoln will start a five-game homestand and not play its next away game until February 9.
