Doug Overton begins his third season as the Lincoln University Head Men’s Basketball Coach.
The Lincoln men’s basketball team finished the 2017-18 season with a 12-15 record, a five-win improvement over the previous season. Overton’s quad also improved upon their 5-12 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games in 2016-17 to 7-9 in 2017-18 before losing to Fayetteville State in the opening round of the CIAA Tournament.
Season highlights included a four-game win streak early in the season as well as conference road wins at Johnson C. Smith, Elizabeth City State and Chowan; two of which went into overtime. Lincoln also won their annual “Battle of the First” contest against Cheyney University.
In his first season as the Lions mentor, Overton’s squad produced a 7-20 overall record and a 5-12 conference mark ending the season with a tough 61-60 loss to St. Augustine’s at the CIAA Championship Tournament.
During the course of the season, Overton earned CIAA Coach of the Week honors twice. He was named CIAA Coach of the Week on December 5, 2016 after defeating area rival University of the Sciences for his first win as the Lions head coach on November 29, 2016 and earned his second Coach of the Week honor after winning two of three road contests against CIAA South
Division squads during the week of January 5-11, 2017.
Overton took over the program from John Hill who resigned after his 2015-16 squad finished the season at 9-20. Coach Overton is a Philadelphia Basketball legend that stayed close to home. A graduate of Dobbins Technical High School - he went on to star at La Salle University where he scored more than 1700 points and earned a place not only in the La Salle University Hall of Athletes but also the Big Five and Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. After a stellar collegiate career which included leading his team to three NCAA appearances he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary/Special Education.
Throughout his playing career and to this day Overton has kept his roots in Philadelphia and continues to give back. He created the Doug Overton Basketball Camp in 1992. This camp is the longest consecutively run free basketball camp for inner city youth in Philadelphia history. He is also the founder of the "No Opponent Basketball Academy" a program designed to help students ages 6-17 develop life and basketball skills within the Philadelphia tri-state area.
Prior to becoming the head coach at Lincoln, Overton was a game analyst for Comcast Sports covering Philadelphia 76ers basketball. He spent the 2013-14 season as the Head Coach of the Springfield Armor, an NBA Developmental League Team affiliated with the Brooklyn Nets.
Overton joined the Armor after spending five years (2008-13) on the Nets’ staff as an assistant coach and player development coach. He also served two seasons as an assistant coach on Phil Martelli’s staff at Saint Joseph’s (2006-08) and one season as the Philadelphia 76ers’ director of player development (2005-06), where he assisted the coaching and scouting staffs and worked with the team’s community outreach programs.
An 11-year NBA veteran, Overton appeared in 499 career games with eight teams, including the Washington Bullets (1992-95), Denver Nuggets (1995-96), 76ers (1996-98, 1998-99), Orlando Magic (1998-99), Nets (1998-99, 2000-01 and 2003-04), Boston Celtics (1999-2001), Charlotte Hornets (2000-01) and Los Angeles Clippers (2001-02 and 2003-04). He also had stints in the CBA, ABA and overseas during his 14-year professional career. The former point guard holds NBA averages of 4.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 14.6 minutes per game.
Overton was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame in 1997. He is also a member of La Salle's Hall of Athletes. He is a 2011 Inductee into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Summit Chapter).
Overton currently resides in the Philadelphia area with his wife, Chanel, and daughter, Maya. His son, Miles, is a junior on the Drexel University men’s basketball team after having played two seasons (2013-15) with Wake Forest.
