RALEIGH, N.C. – The Lincoln University (Pa.) volleyball team opened Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Monday evening with a 3-0 setback against Shaw University at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Shaw claimed the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-10 and 25-16. The Lions moved to 1-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Inside the Numbers
Charly Manley (Upper Marlboro, MD/Frederick Douglass HS) directed the offense with six assists and delivered three of Lincoln's four service aces.
Yvette Mercedes (Columbia, MD/) added one ace and two blocks.
Defensively,
Niana Coar (Aberdeen, MD/) led the Lions with five digs and two blocks.
Liani Figueroa (Brooklyn,NY/) collected four digs, while Manley and Mercedes added two apiece.
Shaw finished with 34 kills and a .208 hitting percentage. Taelin Connolley led the Bears with nine kills and four service aces.
How it Happened
Lincoln's strongest performance came in the opening set, when the Lions recorded four kills and challenged Shaw at the net. Lincoln finished the match with eight total blocks while limiting the Bears to one.
Amira Billingsley (Glen Burnie, MD/) paced the Lincoln attack with three kills and added two blocks.
Elise Carter (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna HS) contributed two kills and a team-high three blocks, while
Audreynette Lydgate (Bowie, MD/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) finished with two kills.

Lincoln's game against Virginia State slated for Thursday, September 24, has been postponed. The next match for the Lions will take place on Monday, September 28 against Elizabeth City State University at 6:00 p.m.
