Ettrick, VA – November 16, 2024 – The Lincoln University (PA) women's basketball team suffered a 53-67 loss to Shaw University in their opening game of the VSU Tournament. Despite a strong opening quarter, the Lions couldn't maintain their momentum against the Bears.
Lincoln started the game with a 15-10 lead in the first quarter, showing promise on both ends of the court. However, a rough second quarter saw the Lions score only 9 points, while Shaw took control with an 18-point effort. The Lions continued to battle but were ultimately outscored in the third and fourth quarters, 16-14 and 23-15, respectively.
Senior Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) led the charge for the Lions, posting 14 points, grabbing 8 rebounds, and recording 6 steals. Senior Anyssa Fields (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) added 12 points and 10 rebounds, earning a double-double, and contributed defensively with a block and a steal. Freshman Anyia Gibson (Edgewood, MD/) also made her presence felt with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and a block.
Despite a difficult shooting night, Lincoln showed resilience, forcing 22 turnovers and scoring 20 points off those opportunities. However, Shaw's bench outscored Lincoln's 24-11, and the Bears capitalized with 38 points in the paint compared to the Lions' 12.
The Lions will look to bounce back in the final game of the VSU Tournament tomorrow, November 17, 2024, when they take on Johnson C. Smith University at 1 p.m.
