Ettrick, VA - November 17, 2024 - The Lincoln University (PA) women's basketball team narrowly fell to Johnson C. Smith University in a thrilling overtime match, ending with a 68-71 loss at the Multipurpose Center in the VSU Tournament.
The Lions got off to a strong start, taking a 19-12 lead in the first quarter, and held a 31-20 advantage at halftime. However, Johnson C. Smith surged in the second half, outscoring Lincoln 19-11 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Despite a hard-fought effort, Lincoln couldn't regain the upper hand in the extra period.
Senior Ciani Montgomery (Philadelphia, Pa./West Catholic Prep) led the Lions with a stellar performance, notching a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds while adding four assists and a steal. Fellow senior Anyssa Fields (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) contributed 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three steals, showcasing her all-around impact. Freshman Ariana Makumi (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Poly) impressed with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks in a standout game.
The Lions dominated the boards with 53 total rebounds, including 20 on the offensive end, leading to 20 second-chance points. Their defensive effort included eight steals and four blocks, but turnovers proved costly, with 19 giveaways leading to 14 points for the Golden Bulls.
Lincoln will look to bounce back in their next matchup against Felician University on November 22, 2024, in the Title IX Challenge. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
